This weekend I was able to obtain a copy of:
Ballads and Songs, edited by H.M. Beldon - from Missouri Folk-Lore Society
This is the 1955 Paperback edition - original cost $4.00
The book was originally published in 1940 as a hardback (I assume)

What a great book (even though I am English, I live in America).
At first I was disappointed at the lack of tunes within, but was almost immediately drawn to those songs provided by Mrs. Eva Warner CASE (later Mrs. J.S. Lichtenberg of Kansas City) mostly remembered from her childhood in Harrison County, Missouri.
18 of her songs are listed, all but two have tunes and all but one have complete texts (there is a note that says that tune had 14 verses, but they are not in book). Included are 10 Child Ballads!!

Does anyone know any more about Mrs. Case?
My interest is also peeked by the fact that my Grandmother was a Case - but born in Hampshire of a father born in Dorset and a mother born in Suffolk!! I am sure they were not related - but you never know??

Sorry, I don't know anything about Ms. Case.

However, I see that my public library has two reference copies of this book.

To me, the critical question is "Are the tunes any good?"

Are they?

I have since found out that Mrs. Eva Case was born - Miss Eva Watkins, and she married Mr. John Homer Case (Pres. of Case Canning Co. Marshfield) on 24th December 1993.
Eva was a daughter of John W. Watkins, a farmer residing near Elkland, and a great-granddaughter of the late Judge William Haymes a pioneer of Webster County, having settled there there in 1833.

It appears that Mrs. Case was a mother of 6 (5 of whom were boys), and an active worker in the Methodist Episcopal church and the Women's Christian Temperance Union and was a force for good in her community.

Her husband John Homer Case was born near Elkland, but the family came from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Case family was founded in America by 5 brothers from England who were Iron workers.

This information came from "Missouri- The Center State" 1915 by Walter B. Stevens via
Google Books.

As to tunes, I haven't got my wife to play them for me yet.
However, I did note that NONE appear in my abridged edition of Bronson - Tunes of the Child Ballads - so who knows??
