This is great, thank you everyone. The Chantey sing sounds perfect.

Guest Lin - I was in LA last week. Didn't have time for anything folky though, except seeing the divine Abigail Washburn.

Tim, Tim, Tim,
I hope you're listening to the recommendations for the Chantey sing at Hyde Street Pier.

If you were there on a Wednesday night, I'd recommend the singaround at Faith Petric's house, which takes place every other Wednesday.

These are the two main folk music gatherings in San Francisco, although there are many others - you'll find them in the calendar Claire linked to.

Have a great time!

Let me also recommend the Saturday night shanty session. I've been going for the last 20 years or so, and can assure you of a wonderful time singing. Peter (Chantyranger here) does a great job of leading the event. It sometimes starts off slow, but we're there from 8:00 to midnight, and it always picks up as it goes along.

Hi:

There is a place in SF called, "Cafe International" The address is 508 Haight St. San Francisco, CA Phone # 415-552-7390.
They have open mike night on Fridays at 7:30 PM.

If you just go to their site on Google, type in Cafe International, San Francisco, CA. it will bring up their page and shows a map as well. YOu can always call the phone number earlier in the day to ask more detailed questions you may have about the club or directions. Or call the day before.

Will you have a car or using public transportation? Buses are pretty good in the city so you shouldn't have any problem getting around the city using the buses and or the BART system (rail).

Most hotels have info. about the buses, etc.

Hope you have a good time! Only in SF? Or will you be travelling to Los Angeles as well?

I see I'm not the only one to recommend the chantey sing. Great!

This site (the San Francisco Folk Music Club calendar) will give you a starting place. I believe the Sunday session in the Starry Plough (Berkeley) is not exclusively Irish, but others will see this who will know better than me I'm sure.

Depending on your interests, you may also be interested in the chantey-singing session at the Hyde Street Pier, San Francisco's National Maritime Historic Park, which Mudcatter Chanteyranger runs on the first Saturday night of every month. It's a free programme, but you must let them know you are coming. A PM to Chanteyrtanger or a telephone call to the park should cover that.

Best of luck finding something that matches your musical interests!

Tim,

Although I live in Massachusetts, if I was going to be in San Francisco this coming weekend I would make sure I attended the open chantey (shanty, shantey) sing at the San Francisco National Maritime Historic Park on Saturday, April 2. Let's see if I can make a link: click here.

You get to join dozens of San Franciscans (as well as the odd Londoner:0) in a historic tall ship singing traditional sea songs. If you see Ranger Peter, who usually runs the event, tell him Jerry Bryant sent you.

Have fun!

Jerry

I'm visiting San Francisco (from London) on Thursday till Sunday. I have a ticket for BeauSoleil on April 4th but can anyone point me in the direction of either a good session I can sit and listen to or a sing I can join in with?
