I thought there might be some folks here that will be interested in this. I do not profit from this nor am I even a member of the Charlotte Folk Society, I just like to go to some of their "concerts", and like to share a good thing.

I've been told that Dick Hensold is a really nice guy as well as really good at his obscure (and interesting!) instruments, and that the host-family are also really nice folks. If you follow the link given in the text, somewhere on the CFS page are demos of Hensold's skill.
They have a house-extension used for meetings which allows for many more folks to turn up than they currently have booked for this house-concert, I think I was told it can seat 60.

And some of you might find the Charlotte Folk Society, or the Clemens, useful to keep in touch with, as well.

Eluned

The concert features Hensold on Northumbrian smallpipes , reel pipes (an indoor version of the Scottish Highland pipes intended for Scottish dance music), seljefløyte (Norwegian willow-flute), säckpipa (Swedish bagpipes), pibgorn (Welsh hornpipe), and several other instruments. (See pictures of these instruments and listen to tune samples at www.folksociety.org) Dick will play music in several traditional and historical styles, with particular emphasis on Cape Breton, early Scottish, Irish, and Northumbrian, but also including Scandinavian, medieval, and original music. The program also includes a couple of songs, neither of them in English, and a limited amount of dancing while seated.   Join us for an intimate musical evening with one of America's finest and most unusual traditional bagpipers.

Dick Hensold (www.dickhensold.com ) is a brilliant specialist in a uniquely versatile and sophisticated instrument, the Northumbrian bagpipes. He has performed and taught throughout North America and England, Scotland, Japan & Canada. This instrument is from the quieter, bellows-blown pipe family, which includes the Irish uillean pipes (a la The Chieftains), Scottish smallpipes, and baroque musette de coeur. It as a most engaging sound that "pops" out tunes in a detached (staccato) fashion. You may have heard it used by the prolific Kathryn Tickell, John Renbourne groups (Pentangle, etc.) On his excellent CD, Big Music For Northumbrian Smallpipes, Dick features tunes from Scotland, Ireland, Northumbria, and his own compositions.

We hope you can join us for another fun evening for great cooking, stimulating socializing, and a incredible musical experience.
