Bob-

We Down Easters have our own version of "Away Idaho" which is titled "Away Isle au Haut" and here's a sample verse:

"They say, there is a land,
Where the crystal waters flow,
And beds of cod are there by God,
Way out at Isle au Haut."

I wonder which came first?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

This was the dedication of a 12 month exhibition of the life and times of Isaac Stevens, first territorial governor of the Wwashington territory, 1853-55. It also spoke to the 150th anniverary of the civil war. I sang a mish mash of folk songs that were sung in the territory in the mid 1850, then melded into a half dozen civil war songs. At the end of the program I sang "Last Letter Home." I introduced this by saying this is a song that reflects a common theme to all wars.

Secretary of State Sam Reed was dressed in a full Union Generals uniform. There were a score of civil war "re-enactors" (sp?) in full uniform there, as well as a bugler.

I opened the program, and I also closed it with "Last Letter Home." When I finished, the silence was profound. It really hit them.

It was an interesting afternoon for us. I may do more of this kind of thing. bob

Oooops Mary ... you meant the capital building this afternoon. It went well ... lot's of nine foot tall cops ... but I passed inspection. Actually it was quite fun ... what a marble palace, the Washington State Capital in Olympia. I had to restrain myself from singing: "Banks of Marble." bob

Mary ... I don't know how it went ... it doesn't happen until Friday! Two concerts actually ... one in the afternoon for the kids, another that evening.

I saw this and I'd swear it said "The Deckman in Court". Wondered what he'd done now.

"They say, there is a land,
Where the crystal waters flow,
There's beds of gold, of purest hue,
Way out in Idaho."

Charlie, how did you know that I'll be singing that song this afternoon in our state capital of Olympia for the governor! bob

Idaho?

That's somewhere out in the Northern Rockies?

Away Idaho!
We're coming Idaho,
Our four-horse team will soon be seen
Way out in Idaho!

Give us a full report.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

We can't do it this trip Mike. Maybe if you talked with the civic leaders and they moved Pocatello up north ... say ... somewhere closer to northern Idaho! bob
