Can anybody help with transcribing a line in the third verse of this Joe McCoy song:

If we shpuld accidentally get too high to go home
I've got an extra dollar to buy a ................?

I suspect that Will Fly may be able to help on this. Hopefully somebody can.

Thanks

Hoot

I haven't got a transcription, I'm afraid, but that particular track appears on Document DOCD-5271, which is Volume 1 of Document's 4 CD series of Hamfats recordings

Thanks Fred,

I have owned the Harlem Hamfats vinyl album for more years than I care to remember but I am unable to unscramble those few (three ?)words. I was just messing around with the chord sequence recently and decided to learn the words. I am happy with the rest of it but those few words have me stumped

LET'S GET DRUNK & TRUCK

(Hudson Whittaker (Tampa Red))

Plenty liquor 'round a gang of beer,
A cozy corner and a word of cheer,
No one to bother, so gee, my dear,
Let's get drunk and truck.

I know your other man is out of town.
My other woman she's not around.
Now is the time to break them down.
Let's get drunk and truck.

If we should accidentally get too high to go home,
I've got an extra dollar to rent a parking room.

Plenty kisses and other fun,
And a gallon to wake up on,
So there is nothing to be waiting on.
Let's get drunk and truck.

(Repeat)

[As recorded by Tampa Red, 1936. This sounds like the ancestor, in concept anyway, of Jimmy Buffet's "Why Don't We Get Drunk (And Screw)," allegedly written by Marvin Gardens, 1973. JTD]

Jim Dixon don't make too many mistakes in his research, and whenever he's in doubt he says so on the thread. So, I'd go with the above.

"to rent a parking room' is not what the Harlem Hamfat vocalist sings at that line. He sings 'to buy a ...' A 2 word phrase follows - the first word has one syllable and the second 2. It definitely sounds nothing like 'parking room'. Like Hoot, I cannot decipher it - the first word sounds like it begins with an 'f'.

You can hear the Harlem Hamfats singing LET'S GET DRUNK AND TRUCK at this MySpace page.

I listened, and I think he's singing "to buy us all some corn," meaning corn liquor, or whiskey. In his dialect, "corn" is pronounced with a nearly silent "R" so it sounds nearly like "cone" or "cawn."

It's clearer the second time he repeats the line than the first.

I am disappointed to learn that the Harlem Hamfats were in Chicago. I have an LP anthology (Copulatin' Blues) on which they are identified as accompanying one Johnny Temple singing Stavin' Chain on the day I was born (28 October 1937, Harkness Pavilion, New York). If they had been in Harlem, they would not have been far away either.

Here's my version of the lyrics....And, the Hamfats included the McCoy Brothers, from Mississippi...

Anyone got the chords? I used to have 'em.....

LET'S GET DRUNK AND TRUCK

Plenty liquor and a gang of beer/appears
A cosy corner and a word of cheer
No one will bother us while we're here/no one to bother; so, gee, my dear:
Let's get drunk & truck

I know your other man is out of town
My other woman she is not around.
Now is the time to break 'em down:
Let's get drunk & truck

If we should accidently
Get too high to go home
I've got an extra dollar
To buy us all some corn!/to rent a party/parking room

Plenty kisses and other fun
Another gallon to wake up on/and a gallon to wake up on
Thought it's nothing to be waiting on:
Let's get drunk and truck!         Yeah!   INSTRU BREAK 2 verse & chorus & verse

Plenty liquor and a gang of beer/appears
A cozy corner and a word of cheer
No one will bother us while we're here/no one to bother, so; gee, my dear:
Let's get drunk & truck

I know your other man is out of town
My other woman she is not around..
Now is the time to break 'em down:
Let's get drunk & truck

If we should accidently
Get too high to go home
I've got an extra dollar
To buy us all some corn!/to rent a parking room!/party room

Plenty kisses and other fun
Another gallon to wake up on/and a gallon to wake up on
Thought it's nothing to be waiting on:/so there is nothing to be waiting on
Let's get drunk and truck!

April 1, 1936 - Tampa Red
June 21, 1936 - Norridge Mayhams and the Blue Chips
August 14, 1936 - Harlem Hamfats
August 20, 1936 - Lil Johnson

I guess it wasn't hard to hear some version of that song that year...

Sule,
It seems like no musicians are coming up with an answer so here is my attempt. If playing in the key of C here's what I do:

          For the verses:

          C---/C---
          F---/F---
          C---/A---
          D-G-/C---

For the section starting "If we should etc etc

          E---/E---
          A---/A---
          D---/D---
          G---/G---

I hope that this is enough to help you sort it out.

Hoot

On the Tampa Red version, sure sounds like "pocket room"
