After the popularity of the list of truanting words from school I thought a slightly more obscure one might be interesting -

The word used at school for asking for food, or those who asked for food.

We had "scabbing" and a "scab" in 1990's Bristol, and I am told it was the same in Coventry at the same time.

Another friend told me that in the 1980's in Torquay it was "Scavving"

I thought it was jus in Bristol but it seems wider spread...

I've never heard these before, maybe they're local to the area. But I DO remember the dinner ladies yelling out "Anybody want secs?" and we duly queued up innocently for second helpings. Ah, those unsophisticated days...

To clarify - this was asking for food from each others lunchboxes or plates...

Seem to remember as a first former at grammar school phrases such as
"you don't want that pudding/those chips/that sausage do you?" being used by bigger kids during school dinners, surprised we ever made it to the 2nd. year but we did and of course then used the same script. By the time I left the less subtle "Give us yer dinner money! was the favourite.

Really just refreshing this - but surprised - mostly because a friend thought they might have used it in Coventry, yet no-one here has heard of it... Maybe it is a westcountry thing mainly, there are not too many westcountry mudcatters I think.
