Subject: Folklore: School words for asking for food From: Floksnog Date: 06 Apr 11 - 02:00 PM After the popularity of the list of truanting words from school I thought a slightly more obscure one might be interesting - The word used at school for asking for food, or those who asked for food. We had "scabbing" and a "scab" in 1990's Bristol, and I am told it was the same in Coventry at the same time. Another friend told me that in the 1980's in Torquay it was "Scavving" I thought it was jus in Bristol but it seems wider spread... |

Subject: RE: Folklore: School words for asking for food From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 07 Apr 11 - 05:41 AM Seem to remember as a first former at grammar school phrases such as "you don't want that pudding/those chips/that sausage do you?" being used by bigger kids during school dinners, surprised we ever made it to the 2nd. year but we did and of course then used the same script. By the time I left the less subtle "Give us yer dinner money! was the favourite. |

Maybe it is a westcountry thing mainly, there are not too many westcountry mudcatters I think. |
