Subject: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: katlaughing Date: 06 Apr 11 - 10:48 PM I know the main song which came out of this series is Ashokan Farewell. I've known it for years. We have been watching reruns of the series this week, having missed it when it first came out. Other than being annoyed at the constant repetition of familiar tunes, the music has been okay. BUT I cannot remember the name of the one they use in most openings and closings of each episode. It is very familiar. Anyone know the name? I was actually surprised...there don't seem to be many threads on the music from this other than Jay Ungar's AF. Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 07 Apr 11 - 12:57 AM Kat, Nice to see you posting again, besides in your thread of your ailment! I sincerely hope you are feeling better!!!! As to some of the music, I watched the end credits, and noticed they made no mention of 'Shenandoah', though they played it, during the broadcast, which I've been watching. You mentioned 'Ashoken Farewell', so, I thought I'd link to a very well done performance of that song, done by a dear friend, done at the Helix Centre, in Dublin, Ireland. 'Ashoken Farewell' played by Mairead Nesbitt and, Shenandoah, Slane Castle, Ireland 'Shenandoah'---Mairead Nesbitt I hope you enjoy them, and a full, and speedy recovery!!!!! GfS |

Subject: RE: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: kendall Date: 07 Apr 11 - 07:01 AM Surely one of the best TV programs ever. I'm a Civil War nut and I love it. First time I saw it, by the end I was in tears to think of the stupidity that man is capable of. |

Lee was on the losing side; if he had been fighting for the Union that war wouldn't have lasted a month. I would put him among the top 5 generals of all time.Maybe top 2. |
Subject: RE: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: Desert Dancer Date: 07 Apr 11 - 10:28 AM "The Southern Girl's Reply" is to the tune of "The Bonny Blue Flag", I suspect it's probably the latter they had in mind, rather than the former. (we heard Tim E. sing SGR last month, as it happens...) ~ Becky in Long Beach |
Subject: RE: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: katlaughing Date: 07 Apr 11 - 11:23 AM Thanks, folks. When I have more time and energy, I"ll see if I can find samples of the following to help with identification of the one song I and thinking about. I didn't think my Rog or I would ever say this, but after all most a full week of watching this excellent series, I hope to never hear some of the music, again, esp. Ashokan Farewell! Here's a track list I was able to find: Drums of War Oliver Wendell Holmes Ashokan Farewell Battle Cry of Freedom We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder Dixie/Bonnie Blue Flag Cheer Boys, Cheer Angel Band Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier Lorena Parade Hail Columbia Dixie Kingdom(?) Coming (my handwriting sucks!) battle Hymn of the Republic All Quiet on the Potomac Yankee Doodle Palmyra Schottische When Johnny Comes marching Home Shenendoah WJCMH March (????) Georgia Battle Cry of Freedom BHotR AF with Sullivan Ballou letter Obviously, they just didn't list everything on there as I remember hearing snippets of many more songs. Ah, well. Thanks, again, kat |

Yeah, though Mairead plays it very well, I thought it was 'less than exciting'!! Glad to read your spunk again!!! Regards, GfS |
Subject: RE: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: katlaughing Date: 09 Apr 11 - 03:27 PM Thanks, again. Don't get me wrong, I do love Ashokan Farewell, esp. the first time I heard it in Legends of the Fall; it was just WAY overused in the CV series, imo. Thanks to Spaw listening to me croak a bit, we've identified the song I originally asked about. There is a nice dulcimer rendition of it on youtube: Battle Cry of Freedom with lyrics and other info. Thanks, Spawdarlin'! |
Subject: RE: Burns' Civil War series music on PBS From: iancarterb Date: 10 Apr 11 - 11:45 AM Most or all of those songs are on Frank Warner's early album of Civil War songs, obviously excepting Ashokan Farewell. Jeff Warner does a very nice Southern Girl's Reply on his Jolly Tinker album. It sounds like he's known it a long time.:) carter |
