Culture Ireland has awarded a grant of 10,000 Euro to Sidmouth FolkWeek 2011.
The grant will support the festival in programming a specific strand of work called "Celebrate the Tradition: Ireland" which focuses on some of the best artists coming out of the current Irish music scene, many of whom are not seen (or not seen enough) in the UK. The festival will feature the artists in concerts and workshops.
Culture Ireland exists to support Irish artists in international touring and showcasing opportunities. Sidmouth is absolutely delighted to have been successful with this bid.
"Celebrate the Tradition: Ireland" includes the following artists:
Brendan Begley and Caoimhín O Raghallaigh
Members of Cór Cúil Aodha
And hopefully a residency/performance project that will bring together students from the Newcastle University Folk Degree with students from the Irish World Music Academy in Co Limerick.
It is hoped that other similar national programmes will feature in future festivals.

That's quite an achievement - let's hope availability of the funds is underwritten by insurance?
Maybe Iceland next year?
