I played this once at a retirement home, and a woman piped right up that she thought the singer was going to kill himself. Was he telegraphing his eventual suicide?

I guess having the words might help...

I'll Have to Do it While I'm Here WHEN I'M GONE
by Phil Ochs
    G                                                        Em
There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone,
   C                        Am                         D
And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone,
G         Em                 Bm                    Em(high)
And you won't find me singin' on this song when I'm gone,
C                 D                    G
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

And I won't feel the flowin' of the time when I'm gone,
All the pleasures of love will not be mine when I'm gone,
My pen won't pour a lyric line when I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

And I won't breathe the bracin' air when I'm gone,
And I can't even worry 'bout my cares when I'm gone,
Won't be asked to do my share when I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

And I won't be runnin' from the rain when I'm gone,
And I can't even suffer from the pain when I'm gone,
Can't say who's to praise and who's to blame when I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

Won't see the golden of the sun when I'm gone,
And the evenin's and the mornin's will be one when I'm gone,
Can't be singin' louder than the guns while I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

All my days won't be dances of delight when I'm gone,
And the sands will be shiftin' from my sight when I'm gone,
Can't add my name into the fight while I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

And I won't be laughin' at the lies when I'm gone,
And I can't question how or when or why when I'm gone,
Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here.

repeat first verse, with finish

Saul, are you referring to the song, 'When I'm Gone' which contains the line, "So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here."?

That song was written in the mid-sixties, Ochs died a decade later in 1976. As he apparently did have depression problems, perhaps the song presages an early death or even a suicide.

John

On the other hand, check out the lyrics of That's The Way It's Gonna Be and see if you think those are the words of someone destined to suicide.

I've noticed that people who die young sometimes do have a sense of personal mortality (which Ochs writes about here), but he is using this song to encourage action; make hay while the sun shines for one day we all die. If you want the clearer warnings of suicide go to the post-Chicago "No More Songs," and "Rehearsals for Retirement."

Yes, "When I'm Gone." That's what it says on the vinyl.

Love this song. When I discovered that Ochs had killed himself I immediately thought of this one, and how right he was that he had to do all that stuff while he was here. I didn't take it as an I'll be gone soon song, more as a better stick around as long as I can so I can keep singing louder than the guns, one of my favorite lines.

But that woman was right.

which woman, Mezzy?

so, can anyone come up with the Bob Blue lyrics? I've never heard them and can't find anything online besides a chance to buy a CD of people singing Bob Blue songs including "While I'm Here"

Phil actually thought that his songs - and more importantly the information they contained- would eventuallyy convince the populace that the many wrongs in U.S. society that he identified should and could be rectified.

His suicide came about when he was finally forced to admit that wasn't the case.

The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair."

                                        ― H.L. Mencken

Phil, we hardly knew ye. Rest easy.
