Subject: Tech: Making an Mp3 from You Tube From: Stringsinger Date: 09 Apr 11 - 11:23 AM Has anyone please knowledge of how to make an Mp3 of a musical performance from You Tube? Is this legal? I would like to be able to have an Mp3 of early You Tube performances so that I could annotate them in music notation by slowing them down on my Slowdowner. Please advise. Frank |

As to how you might do it, having consulted your lawyers and got full legal clearance ... I'd have thought that recording the audio whilst it plays would be the way to go. Audacity will do this (e.g. record the sound being played on your computer speakers) and the various commercial sound editors (Audition, SoundForge etc.) will do the same. Another alternative is the Freecorder toolbar which sets up as a browser toolbar, although not everyone is happy with having that on their system (I've never found any suspicious activity associated with its presence, others may join this thread and state otherwise). |

Subject: RE: Tech: Making an Mp3 from You Tube From: Arkie Date: 09 Apr 11 - 12:06 PM It can be done rather easily with Audacity. There is a white box with a little arrow about midway the toolbar. This needs to be set on Wave to record from the computer. If you are using Audacity, you already know this, but there is a plug in that allows exporting to MP3. The quality of this export is not the best but most likely good enough for what you would like to do. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Making an Mp3 from You Tube From: Smokey. Date: 09 Apr 11 - 12:06 PM There's a Firefox extension which does it successfully called 'Easy YouTube Video Downloader'. Works fine on Mac, and gives a choice of video qualities when there is one, and the option of downloading just the audio as mp3. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Making an Mp3 from You Tube From: RTim Date: 09 Apr 11 - 12:12 PM I would just plug my digital H2 Zoom recorder, via the Line In port, into the Earphone jack on the computer and record the music!! As to Legality? Tim Radford |
