Ah, someone's just added Annan Water, giving us our first two drownings of the day:

Ballads chosen so far:

Sovay
Fair Mary of Wallington
The Wife of Usher's Well
Clerk Saunders
Willie o' the Winsbury
Barbara Allen (Irish, American & English versions)
The Lost Lady Found
The Elfin Knight
Annan Water

Clerk Saunders
Willie o' the Winsbury
Barbara Allen (Irish, American & English versions)
The Lost Lady Found
The Elfin Knight

Nearly half of these are deathless, in the sense that there isn't a death in them. This is unusual and slightly unsettling.

Having taken a Child Ballad class with Brian several years ago, I can attest that his fresh yet well-rounded approach to ballads is a great resource for anyone who aspires to the singing of ballads.

Sorry I can't be there but I, like Maryrrf, am stuck in the U.S. for the foreseeable future.

'SPEAKERS DO NOT GET DESTROYED BY VOLUME, BUT BY DISTORTION! As such, it is your main goal to limit the amount of distortion that your speakers receive. Not only does this make your music sound better, but it also protects your speakers from premature damage.'

I bet Brian's relieved to hear that.

I should have mentioned that Brian is running an all-day melodeon workshop the day before, and performing at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club in the evening. Separate thread here.

Maryrrf: Brian has done ballad forums for us before, and they have been excellent. How about getting him to do something similar next time he visits the States?

Well I would certainly love to attend this one, but it's way too far and a trip across the pond isn't in the cards right now. This sounds like a wonderful event!

In this forum Brian Peters, leading researcher & performer of some of the greatest of the Child Ballads, will lead the group in discussing where to find the ballads, how to collate & arrange them, & how to set about singing them to best effect. Brian's expertise is well displayed on his CD dedicated to ballads, 'Songs of Trial & Triumph'.
