Subject: Southern Venues and Music Sessions From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 13 Apr 11 - 09:39 PM I will be traveling over the next five or six weeks from Nova Scotia (leave tomorrow) to Myrtle Beach (Apr. 18 to 21) to Nashville ( Apr. 23 t0 27) to Richmond (Apr.29 to May 1) and on to Norfolk (May 1 to 14)and back to Nova Scotia. I am looking for any open mike, coffee house or jam sessions where my path may cross with my Mudcat friends. I am not looking or want paying gigs but any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Janie Date: 13 Apr 11 - 10:04 PM Hi Sandy, Doesn't look like you will be traversing North Carolina along an east-west axis to get to where you are going, so won't be passing near me. However, it does look like your journey from Nashville, TN to Richmond, VA will likely take you right along The Crooked Road, a musical "trail" along the Blue Ridge of south and western Virginia. The link above is to the page listing and schedule for music and jams along the way. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like you may also go through or near Asheville, NC. If so, send Chance (Fortunato on Mudcat) a pm. They are lovely, social, welcoming people and fine musicians and are sure to know what is happening in their area, even if they are out on tour when you pass through there. Good journey, and look forward to hearing stories. Janie |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Effsee Date: 13 Apr 11 - 10:36 PM Janie, will you stop being a travel agent and get back to "The woman in the holler" please...pretty please ? Aw, go-on you know you really should! |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 14 Apr 11 - 05:56 PM Thanks Janie, I'll check your link out. I've tarvelled through the area before and made the pilgrimage to Maces Springs but not on a Saturday when the Carter Family Fold was open. It won't be Sarurday this time either but I see some weekday jams that I may be able to make. Thanks again, Sandy |

Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Janie Date: 14 Apr 11 - 07:09 PM No way, Sandy, have you tarvelled through that area of Virginia. Tarvelling is illegal anywhere but in North Carolina, the Tarheel State! |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 14 Apr 11 - 11:31 PM Bin there too Janie, from the Blue Ridge to the Outer Banks. |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 14 Apr 11 - 11:37 PM Thanks Lf, but it looks like I won't have much spare time in Richmond but more in Norfolk. |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Anglo Date: 15 Apr 11 - 01:43 AM Bob Zentz is still in Norfolk as far as I know. Great singer, writer of songs that actually say something, and he might know of things going on. With a name like that you ought to be able to find him in the phone book. He used to run a music store but that was long ago. Other Catters may have more info. |
Subject: RE: Southern Venues From: Maryrrf Date: 15 Apr 11 - 10:45 AM Hi Sandy, I run a monthly concert series in Richmond. On April 30th we will present Rick Franklin performing Traditional Piedmont Blues. Here's a link to our website Richmond Folk Music. PM me with more specific times when you will be in Richmond and perhaps we can meet up for a pint, and I'll see if there are any sessions going on. |
