Testing a tool called Apture on the dev site that allows you to highlight words and a "Learn More" pops up and provides more reference info and searches out videos and mp3's and such. Things like this shouldn't happen except by explicit request. Highlighting is the first step for copy/paste, and to have unwanted garbage popping up every time you highlight something is a royal pain. It's particularly hostile to people with slower connections. All these optional features should only pop up when you do something explicit to invoke them, like clicking an icon, right-clicking and selecting an option in a context menu or typing a special keyboard shortcut (iffy). Does no one remember the annoying "helpful" Microsoft paperclip? This is just like that. Nice concept, bad way to implement it. |

I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like, but nothing happens in Opera for me. In Firefox, I have already have an add-on which gives a pop-up preview (called "CoolPreviews") of almost any link, and I watched the video and saw the map without actually clicking..(great for direct links to images). (I disabled my web filters and pop-up blockers for the test.) I'll try again later, and with other browsers. |

I'm curious as to why on some links the information stays in the little pop-up window, in some, the information opens in a new tab, and in some, it navigates away from Mudcat. That could be annoying if I was simply trying to copy and paste and sloppily navigated the cursor over the icon in the process. |

Video and map links work but the image on just brings up a snippet of XML which looks like an "access denied message". No links or popups with info. I have seen the kind of thing that seems to be described on other sites where you hover the mouse over a link and a message window appears with info, usually advertising in my experience. I'm on Firfox 3.6 in Ubuntu Linux, btw. |

I also have auto blocking of all untrusted sites - all are untrusted unless i add them. I'd need to know what sites are essential for this stuff to specifically add them. I used to have a thingy like the coolpreviews ages ago but killed it. It was 'cool' but on dialup it killed the access. Now I have limited allowance Bband, but still resent 'the system' wildly wasting my bandwidth dragging down tons of unwanted crap. Which is why I killed it anyway. Some people will like it, and even I might want to use it occasionally when researching some songs, but I really would want to shut it off much of the time. I hope it won't kick in for the BS threads ... I also ask whether it adds any load to the MC servers themselves. |

I think I really like it, Max. I've been going from thread to thread and highlighting song titles, then going to videos. Hearing lots of music and songs I do not know that I otherwise would probably not have the time to go search out otherwise. |

It's clear that the way I have Firefox set up is the reason it doesn't work there. As others have said it does work with the pop up blocker active, then I suspect Ad Block Plus may be the reason, but I haven't checked it. I can see it could be useful but I'm not worried either way. There are multiple "password vaults" that you can use, some of which are accessible to any program on your computer and some that can only be accessed by the program they "belong to." In some cases a site can use the cookie that identifies you, tagged to indicate that you don't want to be asked to log in when you come back the next time. Cookies are pretty much all in the same place regardless of which browser fetches them up. That's how mudcat keeps track of you - delete the cookie and you'll need to log back in. A few sites accept your "saved" login to let you browse and post, but may insist that the password be manually entered, or that "security questions" be answered if you enter pages where "personal information" might be exchanged. An example would be if mudcat required you to re-log in to change your password or personal page (which I'm happy they don't do). Windows can offer to "save login" for you, in which case it's the site that identifies that a particular login is needed, and Windows doesn't much care how you got there. Passwords and logins are maintained separately for each user, but if you don't password the user login onto the computer anyone who turns it on has them all. Many AV programs have "independent" places for saving the info, with various protocols for their use. For some, you may have to login to the "vault program" before it will pass the passwords it remembers, after you login to open your username on the computer. You're the only one with access to your computer to figure out how it's doing it; but there are lots of other methods you can use (if you can figure out how to turn the defaults off). John |

What I.E. does is a behavior that is similar to I.E./Windows (they are linked in 'interesting' ways) capturing in their 'temp' folders items that I thought were only in Opera's cache. It took me weeks to figure out how to stop THAT! It is hard to even find the storage area, as the coded folders don't even register in many file managers. (I found it by 'backing in' after studying unusual size figures after using a couple of indexing programs.) I kinda like being in basic control over how *I* manage my computer..(*grin*..as if it wasn't obvious). |

Netscape gave me the double arrows that pop-up over any window you can drag wider. Interesting.. |

I have 6 versions of Opera, 2 of K-Meleon, one Firefox, 'cause it fights me about allowing side-by-side versions, the final version of Netscape, one called Lunascape, which is quite interesting...one of Chrome, one of Comodo Dragon.... one little thing called "Off-by One", which is a sort of demo project, .....and somewhere there's an odd item called.....oh, yeah..Internet Explorer 6. Why? Well, because I'm curious about the small (and large) changes they make, and I want browsers to do what *I* want. The newer ones have many nice tricks, but they often delete features I covet. (The trend seems to be to 'dumb-down' some of the advanced option, so as not to confuse folks.) Now, 95% of my use is between the 2 latest Operas and Firefox...but Lunascape is fascinating, though it has crashed a couple times. It has more options than anything I have ever seen. And in THIS case, I found some strange differences in how they render Max's features. (a boy needs a hobby to keep him off the streets) Don't ask how many file managers I have... ☺ |

(and seeing the tabs and being able to control them and hide or unhide them at will is all that keeps me sane with it all. I actually have certain sites I keep tabs open in one browser and not another...with different security settings in some.) And Opera & Firefox both have 'session manager' settings that I can make rules for. |

Attempting to repair a "malfunciton of unknown origin" a "fix" by Microsoft disabled my Google toolbar. Since repair and reconstruction of what was left after the help from Mickey, I find that on any web page, whenever I highlight anything, a little blue square appears that floats around near the selection. I finally got curious enough to click a couple, and find that it gives "instant definitions" on anything that's so obvious that Chongo wouldn't need help, but on "more complex" things that might not be understood by someone with at least his level of intelligence it offers to "find more on Google" and apparently offers choices for kinds of searches based on the applets on my (rebuilt) Google toolbar. The system demonstrated by Max seems more appropriate here, since it gives "localized" information. The Google thing isn't particularly intrusive, and might be helpful (or at least interesting) for some. Either is a lot better than the sites that automatically pop up crap just because your cursor "passed over" a Java hotspot (immmensely annoying). Since Microsoft demonstrated that the Google toolbar is easily removed, and reinstallation isn't all that much bother, those who haven't tried it out probably don't need to be too fearful about the experiment. Note though that I don't know what they call the particular "feature" in question, or what options might have turned it on. It might be something from IE9 that just shows Google because it's set as my primary search engine. It does offer other engines if I click for "more applets" when it offers to search. Has anyone else noticed the little blue box when you highlight something? John |

The behaviour depends on whether I highlight a word from left to right or right to left. R to L Learn More sits due north of the end of the word, and the blue box sits southeast of the word. I can open either by clicking on them. But if I highlight from the end of the word to the beginning Learn More sits sits due north of the start of the word, and the blue box sits northwest of the start, partly overlapping the Learn More box, which opens fine. But if I try to hover the mouse over the blue box, the box moves down to sit due west of the word. If I move the mouse to there, the box resumes its former position, and so on ad infinitum. Wherever I go and whatever I click, it will only open Learn More. Not that I'm complaining, you understand. |
