Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 17 Apr 11 - 07:47 AM Greetings Good People: After over 20 years finally, the Book of Wassail is now available. I first wish to thank heartily all those on this list who have made contributions which were quite generous and at times amazing. WASSAIL! Five volumes 1. Folklore and Interpretation -It is helpful to think of Wassail as the product of two mysteries present at the time of the "folkloric big bang" Mystery one- The change of seasons. Mystery two The unfortunate segregation of an essentially interdependent society. In the folklore section you will find all major interpretations of wassail from the earliest collectors to the present day. 2. Literature and Verse -Presented topically a huge collection of pieces demonstrate the permeation of all aspects of literature through time by Wassail. From the beginning several trends emerge that can be followed through time and can be used to understand the lasting power of Wassail in Culture. 3. The Songs -From the earliest to the most recent composed in 2010. Thanks for your help! Lyrics, original analysis and absolutely every snippet of song. Songs are presented with original commentary and notation where available. Notation is collected all together in a special section. Dance is included as are new recordings. Several hundred songs. (extensive research at the Folklife Center of the Library of Congress included a detailed examination of the Carpenter collection) 4. Food, Drink and all the rest - From scrumpy to possets and smoking bishop. Ancient recopies and a modern one for Wassail shooters along with Wasssail beer recipes. Then there are the breads, meat pies, puddings. We even set you up to prepare Boar's Head for twelfth night. Then there is a history of Wassail bowls. There is the discovery that the tulip shaped bowls may not have been for Wassail at all. Then a history of toasting and even the arms of the family of Wassail and a mathematical problem. Wassail in contemporary culture is included. From items on ebay to notices for wassail events and even a reference to ancient Wassail bowls made from skulls. 5. Bibliography- Complete and extensive together with a detailed contents list across volumes. The volumes are perfect bound. Lots of illustrations. Even present is a history of illustration. The work is also designed to be living. Upon registration owners will be entitled to join an e.mail list and blog that will provide instant updates and corrections. From time to time PDF upgrades will be issued. ALL after cost proceeds go to the perpetuation of folk celebration in Maryland via the Center for Fawkesian Pursuits and supports our free reference web pages. Each year the center hosts a Wassail Celebration which presents the only Mari Lwyd, Christmas Bull and Wassail Box in Captivity in the United States. We teach folk celebration and related crafts and food ways. We accept paypal, cash, US Dollars. Paypal accepts credit cards Here is the web page with order form http://mysite.verizon.net/cbladey/wassailbook/wassailbook.html Substantial institutional discounts will be made available and will be extended to those who made significant contributions to the work. Unfortunately the work is thousands of pages but we do believe that we have kept the cost down to a bare minimum. We are well into debt at this point and regrettably can not provide desk copies. The page is being developed but should work. For further information contact me directly cbladey@verizon.net Thanks again for all the help and support. Conrad Jay Bladey Hutman Productions |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: Cats Date: 17 Apr 11 - 01:50 PM We still wassail in the hamlet in Cornwall where i live and a few years ago Mike o'Connor wrote The Rillaton Wassail for the people of the hamlet which is now sung every year at each of the orchards in the vicinity that we visit |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: Floksnog Date: 17 Apr 11 - 01:58 PM We tried to revive the wassailing for our apple trees in Chagford, Devon, only to find that the people we invited to ours on the old christmas day where going to do theirs on new years day, and had been doing it for years! |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 18 Apr 11 - 09:08 AM Here in Baltimore we at the Center for Fawkesian pursuits hold a multi-faceted very traditional wassail. Ashen faggot, mari lwyd, christmas bull, wassail of trees, in the hall, wassailing the oxen... Proceeds from the publication of our new book support these activities and our free reference web pages. We get a good crowd. The event is free and open to all. A great way to help people gain free access to the ancient traditions. Help us by purchasing the new Book of Wassail Thanks in advance! Conrad |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 18 Apr 11 - 09:36 AM Chagford Popped in a couple of years back for a look at the Three-Hares boss in St. Michael's (?); we've still got a sticker in our kitchen! |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: Chris in Portland Date: 18 Apr 11 - 10:57 AM Conrad - does your book, or might your future research, cover the English pub carol/gallery tradition? I'm hoping to have a workshop on that tradition here in Portland, OR in the Fall - even though I'm a novice on this. Thanks, wonderful what you're doing, Chris |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 18 Apr 11 - 07:10 PM Yes. Caroling door to door is covered. Pub caroling for wassail can go several ways often it goes from pub to orchard or stays in pub or goes from pub to pub or place to place. About 300 some pages on folklore-lots and lots of it included.Volume one. |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: Surreysinger Date: 18 Apr 11 - 09:13 PM Chris - does your query refer to the pub carolling tradition in places such as Sheffield, Derbyshire or Cornwall, or indeed with West Gallery carolling in churches. In which case Conrad's reply seems to be unrelated, as these traditions have nothing to do with carolling from door to door. |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 18 Apr 11 - 09:24 PM No these are in what we in the USA call Hymn singing. However at times wassail in the hall or building involves people sitting around eating dinner and drinking singing wassail songs- sometimes this happens in pubs but is not the same as the hymn singing gathering just to sing songs together not necessarily wassail. |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: Surreysinger Date: 20 Apr 11 - 08:22 AM Which I think was what I said Conrad ...ie that your reply didn't appear to me to relate to the query Chris was making about the English pub carolling and West gallery singing traditions that he was enquiring about. |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 20 Apr 11 - 06:03 PM There are many varieties of wassail. I think the book defines and describes over 20. I guess it depends if wassail the beverage is served and wassail songs sung. |
Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 29 May 18 - 04:28 PM GREAT NEWS! VOLUME 3 SONG AND DANCE IS BEING IMPROVED FOR RE-ISSUE SOON SOMEIME THIS FALL Conrad |

Subject: RE: Review: Wassail book now available From: Richard Mellish Date: 31 May 18 - 04:51 PM The URL given leads to a page that says it's out of print, with a link to the Kindle edition. The Amazon page offers "Do the Wassail", 66 pages, and The Book of Wassail Volume 5, Bibliography; but that's all. How does "Do the Wassail" relate to the five volumes? We're promised an updated volume 3 "this fall": will that be print or ebook? And what about volumes 1, 2 and 4? |
