Win XP.

Mic was off - and now out - but makes no difference.

But yes, I did post earlier that I could delete sound drivers and reinstall. I'm sure I have the motherboard drivers - and I have that clever Russian program with billions of drivers on a disk too, but the mobo may be newer than that program.

Hi, Richard-
You might want to try deleting the sound card driver.
I take it your computer has Windows 7.

• Make sure you're connected to the Internet
  
• Hit the "start" button and go to "computer"
  
• Select "system properties" from the top bar of the "computer" window
  
• Select "device manager" from the left-hand bar on the next window
  
• Go to "sound, video, and game controllers" - right-click and select "uninstall."
  
• Complete the uninstall by rebooting.
  
• On startup, Windows will detect the sound card and install drivers.

With luck, that will fix it. Uninstalling drivers (and allowing reinstall) solves my problems with devices far more often than not.

Just to eliminate the obvious, do you prhpas have a mic plugged in that got turned on (or up) with the reboot? You'd normally expect a feedback squeal, but if there's a delay in the processing it could come through as an "echo loop" even with fairly short acoustic paths.

I've always said that the best gadget for any expensive computer is a UPS. It prevents such possibilities like this.

Probably some corruption of some setting file. Sorry, really beyond my ken. The data saved on the card (in memory on the card) may have be the hassle rather than a file stored on the HD. I would expect that there would be some utility for the card to 'reset' it. You may have to contact the manufacturer - they must have such a beast for when they set up the card in manufacture.

My new quad core that I built has developed a strange symptom. It started after a power cut that shut the computer down improperly while I was out.

I now have shedloads of reverb on audio playback from the internet. It makes speech almost unintelligible and muddles music up a lot. I also ahve had the stereo image move over to the right a lot.

My sound is onboard AC97 - I'm hunting for a good PCIE audio card cheap - and basically there is F*** all to adjust in that.

Where has this dratted reverb come from and how do I make it go away?

Other computers on my network don't do it so it has to be machine specific.
