Subject: Tech: Images off screen? Help please!

I am trying to enter html codes in four boxes on a site, they are in a line across the page from left to right. The problem is, the fourth box is out of sight off the right hand side, I know it's there but I cannot get the page over to the left far enough for it to show.

Is there some way I can reduce the whole site page to include everything, I've been trying for over two hours now and am just about to start pulling my hair out, and I haven't got a lot left anyway. Arghh!

I'm sure you don't mean this but there is a zoom control in the bottom right of the screen and you can zoom to any size - 50% say - and see it.

Unless you mean how do you get the four images to fit which is more about absolute widths of the images

Nick, it is a commercial site and I cannot alter the boxes in any way, it just seems that the whole picture is just too big for my screen.

Also I cannot see any zoom control either.

I'm running WinXP

If "working on a site" means you're doing this in a browser you should have a zoom control. IE shows a box at the bottom right that displays the current zoom setting (usually 100%) with a "wedge-arrow" to drop down a box where you can select a different one. There's also (in IE) a "View" selection on the toolbar where you can change the "Zoom."

You may have to click the "wrench" (tools) to display the useful toolbar (Command Bar, I believe) in recent IE, and the "View" button on the toolbar is then the place to turn on the "Status Bar" so that the current zoom setting is displayed.)

Other browsers should have similar settings. Look for "View" or "Zoom."

If you can't find them, look for a place to show more toolbars.

In most other programs, you're stuck if you're at "full screen" but if you click the "part screen" box (the middle one of the three little boxes at top right in most programs) you can drag the window to whatever size you need to make the window fit on the screen. If a window is extended off-screen, even in part screen view, you may have to drag the opposite side in to be able to move the whole window by dragging the top bar, until it's all on screen and then drag edges back to the window size you want. Once you see the entire window, you'll still need a zoom adjustment to make the whole content fit in the window.

In "full screen" view, some programs will NOT SHOW a scroll bar even if stuff runs off-screen. In part screen (re-sizeable) view most will at least show a scroll bar so that you can chase the rest of the image by scrolling.

If all else fails, increasing the monitor/display resolution makes everything smaller, but if you're on a laptop they mostly refuse to use anything except the (fixed) pixel density of the LCD display. If it's someone else's machine and you can't change anything, you may have to call tech no-support people in.

(The program you're trying to work in probably has more bearing on the problem than the OS.)

John

John, I think you are right when you say

"The program you're trying to work in probably has more bearing on the problem than the OS".

I've tried all the part screen stuff but no luck, when I'm in IE or Google I can get the zoom, but when I open this particular window from the download file there is no toolbar so I reckon I'm stuffed.

Thanks anyway.

HTML hackers who think they are too clever to use the defaults often cause such problems. There is a forced setting that sets the screen to 100% of the display, there are also forced settings that set width in absolute pixel sizes. If I remember correctly the default will be 100% unless you start to physically set pixel numbers, but it's been a while, and it also depends on how like HTML 3.3 and V4 the current 'clever' versions are, and how much dicking around with 'HTML extensions' such as JS , Java, Flash, jsp, xyz, etc the hackers do...

Hi, wilbyhillbilly-
I don't know if it will work in your situation, but [CTRL - ] (control and the minus sign) reduces the size of the font in your browser; and [CTRL + ] (control and the plus sign) increases the font size. Do it right now and check it out.

Maybe that will do the trick for you. Otherwise, you can right-click on a blank spot on your desktop and change the screen resolution, but that can get complicated....

Joe, it works on here but has no effect at all on the window I'm on about.

It's just sooo frustrating, the damn box is hiding and laughing at me.

I think the men in white coats will be here soon, "they're coming to take me away ha ha"

If it is not confidential, could you add a link to the site so that we can see if there is a a way round it?

It sounds like that young pupil who, after a math test, prayed "Lord, please make that 4 times 40 equals 100!"

If you want help, you have to tell us what what sort of boxes you are dealing with. Sometimes something like "width=25%" at each box does the trick (I must look it up myself).

Unfortunately I can't do that as I load it from a file on my pc and there is no url until I have finished it.

I'm waiting for the site owner to contact me but I don't hold out much hope, as I've already sorted one problem whilst waiting.

If I can't suss this one out I'll probably abandon the whole thing.

wilby, I still do not understand the problem. Can you post a snippet of your code here (don't forget to replace < by <)? And explain what result your customer expects.

Grishka, thanks for the interest, but don't worry about it. It's nothing to do with the code, that's fine and I know what I'm doing with that.

I just need to shift the whole display area to the left, or reduce the size of the display to include the whole picture, i.e. a fourth box that I need to put code in is off the right hand side of the screen.

I somehow need to find a way of clicking and dragging the contents to the right a bit so it will then show the missing box.

I'll skip to the bottom and ask if you can read the code? Are you working in a table? If it is at "100%" that means the screen will be filled. If it is higher, say, if you put in "125" meaning pixels and ended up with percent, then there will always be material you can't see on your screen. This is one of those things that can mess up experienced web designers, if "percent" isn't unchecked in some of the editors when defining the number of pixels of space.

There is some very basic information missing. Are you using a HTML design tool? Or are you talking about a browser? What "boxes"????

If the question is: can I make my browser simulate a higher resolution? - The answer is: yes, press Ctrl. and operate your mouse wheel.

What is "this particular window from the download file"? What "download file" - a standalong exe? Or an applet etc.? Or a browser window defaced by JavaScript?

Down on the level of Windows graphics drivers we can actually make Windows use more pixels than supported by the hardware; some time ago I used such a driver. Experts can tell you more if required.

Thanks all, I've managed to solve the problem, but don't ask how!

After playing around for two days with different combinations and keys I accidently hit the tab key and it shifted it over, but guess what, when I tried it again it wouldn't do it.

I eventually managed to get it back so now I'm leaving it where it is, 'cos I still don't know how it worked!

Such things happen to all of us, at all levels of imagined expertise. Please answer my questions nevertheless, so that we can learn as well. It is one of the secrets of places like Mudcat that those who try to help learn most.

I put everything in a table

table width="99%" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="2"

Firefox fits it nicely to the window and Explorer gives a scroll abr along the bottom.

Windows Update wants to update my video driver. I allowed the update, and suddenly my display was too big for my monitor screen. No amound of adjustment could get it to fit right. I had to revert back to the old video driver.

I was going to make some relevant comments, but the thread was closed - now I can't remember what they were, and I'm too busy to dig thru it again.

Good point to remember Joe.
