OK, Mudcat experts on everything - I'm looking for the title of a very light movie set on a minor Japanese island post WW2, in which the hero converts surplus military equipment to build a hotel to provide jobs for the locals.

Is the hero a Japanese or an American or something else apart from those?

Can you give us any more clues? It sounds familiar. 1960s? Color? American, British, etc?

I remember a movie with Marlon Brando and Glenn Fort in Japan post WWII, Teahouse of the August Moon, where they build a teahouse (instead of a school). Okinawa is, I suppose, a minor Japanese island (though they'd prefer to be independent).

SRS

Color, American. Hero is American junior officer or mid-level sergeant, maybe Air Corps. Love interest is a Japanese woman. Includes such picadellos as dying surplus parachutes to use as drapes. Not Teahouse. Driving me nuts.

Is it "Navy Wife" starring Gary Merrill and directed by Edward Bernds? That's what came up in my google search.

Thanks, Kat. I ordered one...remains to be seen if it is a "real" DVD or an off-the-air copy of the late late show. OK to kill this thread now.
