The song was written in 1929 for a part-sound, part-silent film "The Pagan," where it was sung by Ramon Novarro and Dorothy Janis.

The 78-rpm Discographical Project lists around 100 recordings, and Allmusic.com around 220 (many of these are duplicates, that is, the same recording appearing on different albums).

It was used again in the 1950 Esther Williams film "Pagan Love Song," and sung by Howard Keel.

There are several versions of this on YouTube. The one by Franklyn Baur has the verse as well as the chorus.

The Virgin Prunes recorded a different song with the same title.

My mom's had this song running through her head, for months now, but she can't figure out where it comes from! The rest of what she remembers is this:

Amber hills are calling, to them we belong, and we'll cheer each other, With the pagan love song.

She has childhood roots in the mid-west so I thought it might be a high-school song perhaps. (Mixing amber hills of grain with strict upbringing and youthful exuberance). Well, that's fanciful I suppose. Anyone know of it?
