Subject: Art Rosenbaum Field Recordings
From: Fred McCormick
Date: 25 Nov 10 - 05:53 AM

I've just had a release sheet from Red Lick, which lists the following CD.

DFGCD8697 Various: Black & White - Field Recordings By Art Rosenbaum.

That's all it says, and I can't find any more information than that on the Internet. Would anyone have any further detaisl, EG., a track/artist listing?

Many hopeful thanks.

(added by Joe Offer)

This album will whisk you away to the Deep South, celebrated in a movie such as O Brother, Where Art Thou?, where Black and White musicians alike laid the foundations for American music as we know it. Following in the footsteps of famed folklorist Alan Lomax, Art Rosenbaum has spent a half-century unearthing and recording these pioneers in their natural environment. His work proves that music in the South has often been the key to a better understanding between communities on both sides of the racial fence. Art’s fieldwork earned him a Grammy in the “Best Historical Album” category in 2008.

And if that's not it, try this.<

Or even
this.

All three of those collections are great, by the way, and well worth buying in their entirety.

My son gave me Art of Field Recording, Volume 1, a four-CD set with a very nice accompanying book. There is also a Volume 2. Cost for each is about fifty bucks, but worth it. They are "temporarily out of stock" at Amazon, which often means that they will never be stocked again. The box sets are billed as "Fifty years of traditional American music documented by Art Rosenbaum."
Rosenbaum has a video introduction to Volume 2 here (click)

Red Lick currently have Volume 2 of the Art Rosenbaum collection, The Art Of Field Recording in stock at £36-00 plus p&p. Dust To Digital DTD 12. 4CD Boxed set.

Since the set usually retails for around £20-00 more than that, this can fairly be described as one hell of a bargain. All the more so, since it comes in a very sturdy box, with a 96 page booklet packed with copious notes, stunning b/w photographs and reproductions of some of Art's paintings.

My copy arrived yesterday and I've spent most of today playing it and it is stunning. Indeed, as a survey of the traditional music of the American South, this is definitely one to put alongside Alan Lomax's Southern Journey and Sounds of The South sets.

You can buy volume 1 on the Amazon Uk site for about £38.00. Again, four CDs and a magnificent booklet. I really am impressed with these two sets.

Yes, but it's being sold by a dealer who's based in the States. I imported a number of remainder CDs from there recently and ended up paying an arm and a leg in import duty. Something that shape and size would almost certainly attract the attention of the Customs Service.

I got my set from the States some time ago and there was no import duty added.

It seems to be the luck of the drawer whether you get banged for import duty or not. I think I'll just have to order on the basis that it would still be cheaper to get it from the States than get it through a British supplier. It will have to wait until this month's bills are paid though.

The sampler CD for this set was released in 2006 with the thought that the final result would be a five disc set, but after spending a long time with Art pondering the vast quantity of material he has amassed over the years, we decided to extend the release into multiple box sets. Volume I was released in November 2007, and Volume II is planned for 2008.

Art of Field Recording Volume I is a four disc set with a 96 page book that contains essays and annotations by Art and over 100 illustrations and photographs by Art and his wife Margo. Art took a similar approach to Harry Smith in assembling the music: the discs are divided into Blues, Instrumental and Dance, Sacred, and a Survey disc that has a little bit of everything.

"Art Rosenbaum is a folk revivalist of the old school. He believes that traditional ballads, blues, spirituals, and fiddle tunes are among the glories of American culture. Last fall, Dust-to-Digital released Art of Field Recording: Volume I, a four-CD retrospective of Rosenbaum’s work. It contained everything from ring shouts and murder ballads to a song about twenty frogs going to school. It was full of throaty voices and clanging banjos and the incidental music of daily life—babies crying, bar glasses clinking, cicadas on a summer night." — Burkhard Bilger, The New Yorker

Art of Field Recording Volume II is a four disc set with a 96 page book that contains essays and annotations by Art and over 100 illustrations and photographs by Art and his wife Margo. Art took a similar approach to Harry Smith in assembling the music: the discs are divided into Accompanied Songs and Ballads, Unaccompanied Songs and Ballads, Sacred, and a Survey disc that has a little bit of everything.
