My wife's mother used to sing a song which included the line "Do kippers sing folded or flat". can anyone help with the lyrics and any other information about the song?

The US Catalog of Copyright Entries of 1927 (as scanned by Google), has this information:

Do kippers swim folded or flat; comedy waltz song, words and music by Alf Seattle. David Graham and Arthur Strond. all of England: in G. [Staff and tonic sol-fa notations] © Jan. 11, 1926: 1 c. Jan. 13: E 630737; Herman Darewskl ...

However, I would bet the above has some scanning errors, because the British Library has this information in their catalogue:

Do kippers swim folded or flat?
A Beattie; D Graham; A Stroud
©1926.

My father used to quote this line, but I don't remember him singing the whole song. However, I came across this on the Macmillan Cancer Support site (from a contributor now deceased)

Does the kipper swim folded or flat?
I've often pondered on that.
Does it lie on a shelf?
Making eyes at itself
Or lie on the sand like a mat

It doesn't swim round
But lies on the ground.
Just waiting, as life ebbs and flows
So don't doze in bed
Or you'll wake up instead,
With both eyes on one side of your nose.

A couple of those lines ring a bell with me, so maybe this is part of the lyric.

Phil

This song made more sense after I'd googled "kipper image" and seen how kippers are packaged.

Smart thinking, leeneia!

I haven't had much contact with kippers, but I recently bought some frozen salmon fillets, and when I unwrapped them, I found them folded. It makes a more compact package that way. Without this experience, it probably would have puzzled me, too.

According to what I've found on the Internet, apart from it being a song, the question "do kippers swim folded or flat" is an old example of a trick question. You ask the question, and wait for some naïve person to say "flat." Then you point out that kippers don't swim at all. A kipper is, by definition, a smoked (i.e. dead) herring. Herrings swim, kippers don't.

Thanks all, plenty to follow up there.

Jim Dixon: I wish google would return the same results for me as it obviously does for you, I tried googling "Do kippers swim folded or flat", got 3 pages of results, none of which link to your source. Mind you, when I came back here and searched the phrase this thread cropped up, I signed in and it no longer figured in the search engine... I hate internet search engines.

Thanks Newport Boy, that's a few steps further on.

SRD: I found the US Catalog of Copyright entries with a search of Google Books.

I didn't find the information from the British Library with Google (or any other search engine); I went directly to the British Library web site and used their search. It was either here:
British Library Integrated Catalogue Search
or here:
British Library Sound Archive Catalogue Search
--but, oddly, I can't get it to work to find the same information again.

There's lots of information out there that can't be found with Google. By years of experience I have learned some good places to look.

There is a pic of the sheet music cover page there with writers' names, etc. Dates from 1925.

A song on etiquette from Gracie Fields I think advised
'Always hold your kipper with One hand, Not Two and wave it while you're talking, like the big pots do'
