Origins: Edward Brangwyn, 30's songwriter, INFO ?

Does anyone know anything about EDWARD BRANGWYN who wrote a song called People's Front which was published in Canciones de las Brigadas Internacionales? You can see the song reproduced on Google Books using this link.

PEOPLE'S FRONT by EDWARD BRANGWYN

Edward Brangwyn would appear to be British from the lyrics of the song. The book was published in 1938 and the song did not appear in earlier editions of the book published in 1937. I have a complete copy of the book and there is no more information about the man or the song in it.

Not exactly a common name - maybe a brother of the artist Frank Brangwyn?

There are very few references to Brangwyn on the net which do not relate in some way to Frank Branwyn - I have followed most of these up with not glimpse of Edward Brangwyn ever appearing. But someone, somewhere is bound to know. Thanks for your response Jack Campin

I have just realised that I have failed to pass on an interesting piece of information which I received in a PM from Matthew Edwards who did a bit of internet detective work. He said:


It seems the relationship to Sir Frank Brangwyn is very plausible since it was Frank and Philip's father, William Curtis Brangwyn, who initiated this particular spelling of the family name of Brangwin.

Hi Martin, no I had not picked up on that: I reproduce the reference below because it took me a lot of looking to spot it in the list

Edward Brangwyn may have had a connection with the WMA but I think here we just have a list of works and Edward Brangwyn had a work in that list??

The "Our Fight" title certainly suggested he was our man - not that there was any real doubt about that, of course! The page is confusing but the WMA reference suggested to me that there may have been some connection there.

Martin, your connection to the WMA is spot on!

I should have looked here before, but the British Library Catalogue has one, and only one, entry for 'Edward Brangwyn'; he is noted as the composer and author of the song People's front - unison song with piano accompaniment (staff and tonic solfa), published by the Worker's Music Association c.1937.

This must be the same song as that which appears in the Canciones de las Brigadas.

Thank you both, Martin and Matthew, I have put out an appeal for further information on the email system of the International Brigades Memorial Trust but have not had anything back about Edward Brangwyn. If the Peoples Front was published by the WMA then I guess that he was British. It would be great to discover more about him.

The Brangwyn song was on page 54 of the Songbook but that no longer appears at the end of the link which I gave. I will try to find time to type out the words later.
