Subject: Obit: Patrick Galvin From: Fergie Date: 10 May 11 - 03:27 PM Hi All Sad to be the bearer of this sad news but Patrick Galvin, the Irish playwright, writer and poet, has died at the age of 83, at his home in Cork. I'll always remember him as the composer of my personal favourite song 'Where, Oh Where, is our James Connolly?'. When I sing this song at the annual Labour Party and SIPTU commeration of James Connolly at Arbour Hill Cemetery next Sunday, I will dedicate the performance to Patrick Galvin's memory. Fergus |

Patrick Galvin was a poet, dramatist, writer and singer. he recorded for The Worker's Music Association the forerunner of Topic Records London. He also recorded about 6 LP'S for thr Riverside label USA. Patrick Galvin was the author of the ballad Where O, Where is our James Connolly about the execution of James Connolly, the Labour leader for his role in the Rising in Ireland in 1916.He was the author of The Raggy Boy a trilogy of novels based on his experiencec in the Irish Reformatory system recently made into a film. They included 'The Fair of Turloughmore' and 'Dunlavin Green'. His book, Irish songs of Resistance, which was published, first I think by WMA, and later by Oak in America, was, although the historical commentary lacked nuance and sometimes accuracy, was one of the first books I came across that made any attempt to put songs in any sort of context. Traditional song is in his debt. |

He was a clear influence on the Clancy's, whose "Irish Songs of Rebellion" clearly echoed Galvin's earlier record--same title, almost identical content, very similar artwork. |
