I hate to start this thread because I'm hoping it's all a mistake, but I guess it isn't. Gene and I got this e-mail just now from Arkie:

I know that Dale had been communicating with you a bit and that you would be concerned about the news that I just received. Dale's sister called a few minutes ago to tell me that he had passed away. He had not been responding to emails or phone calls so his sister and her minister went over to his house. He was found stretched out in his chair and apparently went quietly. I would think it appropriate to post something at Mudcat, if one of you would like to do so. (Arkie)

Dale Rose was one of the first to post here at Mudcat - I think he first posted in 1996, before I got here. He was registered as Dale Rose but in recent years he usually posted as DWR. He was just a wonderful person. He coached a girls' sports team - I forget which sport, and he did hours and hours of work at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas. He had a special spot in his heart for Ozarks music and music from the Canadian Maritimes, especially the Rankin Family. He loved to research old songs, and his research work was terrific.

And most of all, Dale was a friend, for the last 15 years. Even though I never met him in person, I really enjoyed his company. He lived his life well. May he rest in peace.

I am very sorry to hear about Dale. Very sad.   At first he and I didn't hit it off as we were very different people but as time passed we shared some research on a few songs and I think we both appreciated each other a bit more after that. My condolences to his family.

He was really kind to me when I first came here, esp. during an early "anonymouse(sic)/garg" dust up. I've only a couple of PMs which we exchanged, but they were kindness itself with a huge heap of understanding. It is really to sad to hear he has gone on.

Dale was indeed a good and generous man. He was very knowledgeable about old time and traditional music and would spend hours searching for information to help mudcatters and others involved in music quests. I became acquainted with Dale during his volunteer time at the Ozark Folk Center and am proud to say that we also became friends. My knowledge of and appreciation for Australian and Canadian music is a result of Dale's generous spirit, and he also introduced me to Mudcat. I will miss our emails and visits and his posts to this forum. Dale retired from teaching and volunteered his time coaching the girl's volleyball team at Clinton, Arkansas High School. He is survived by his mother and a sister who lived near him here in Arkansas and by other siblings in Illinois and elsewhere. One of his major projects was producing a weekly broadcast on KFFB radio of music from the Ozark Folk Center archives.

This came as a complete shock to me, I talked to Dale just a few days ago on the phone. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in his speech or actions, and he didn't mention any problems.

He talked often about the performers he had met at the Ozark Folk Center and of the young people he had met and become friends with thru the years at the center. He often E-mailed me song clips and pictures and an occassional video of some of them.

We talked a bit about Hazel Dickens and Alice Foster, that night and he E-mailed me:

"The Green Rolling Hills Of West Virginia",
by the Blugrass Brigade and also by Kathy Mattea.

I am also an "Arkie", from near the Arkansas/Oklahama border.

We have been net and phone pals for a long time..

So Long Dale, it was grand knowing you.

Nothing but kindness and mutual respect ever flowed between us. He was always there with good and generous input on several topics he knew I was interested in. What a sad day this is.

If you look at Joe's list of 'DWR' posts, you will see how many times Dale commented gently on the passing of others. Perhaps he is with them now.

This is terrible news. Dale will be sadly missed. I corresponded with him and worked with him on many song transcriptions over the years. I learned a great deal, particularly about old-time American music, from his generous sharing of his extensive knowledge. I would have loved to have met him. Vale Dale.

Mr. Dale Wayne Rose, age 73, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas passed away May 11, 2011 at his home. He was born September 20, 1937 in Rock Falls, Illinois to Joseph (Bud) Henry and Helen Audrey (Crossley) Rose. He was an army veteran, had a bachelor's in education, a school teacher and coach in Valmeyer, Illinois for more than 30 years, and a member of the Christian Church Tampico, Illinois. He had a great love of music and kids which showed with his volunteer works at the Ozarks Folk Center and assisting the volleyball coach at the Clinton High School. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need and Mom says, "He was one great son!" Mr. Rose is survived by his mother; 2 brothers and 3 sisters: Robert (Jack) Rose, May Zemke, Randy Rose, Carole Rose, and Linda Tempel. He was preceded in death by his father and Olive Crossley. A Memoral Service will be held at Fairfield Bay Baptist Church Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11:00am. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Homes. Oh Joe, this is so sad. I loved Dale and we shared much correspondence over the years about songs and other music stuff. He was so dedicated to The Ozark Folk Center and such a wonderful man. I will miss him on Mudcat and in my mail box. He was very generous with his time and

It's good to see that Dale's Good Old Songs Website is still in operation. It seems to me that he had a couple of other Websites that had information on old songs. Can anybody find them?

I came across Dale's name this evening, and it made me thing of all the things I wanted to talk with him about. I've met a lot of wonderful people through Mudcat, but Dale was one of the very best. I never met him in person, but I sure miss him. It's still hard to believe that he's gone.

It's funny/strange that the thread title was a jolt to me. My first thought was: Why didn't I see this when it came out?! Dale was kind to me a couple of times and I appreciated him.

Then I saw my own post and realize now that I did know. My brain is a funny thing.

I hope I die the same way Dale did, sitting in my favorite chair and thinking about things. I have a friend named Joe who died the same, peaceful way - as I would have expected him to. Dale was a lovely person. So was Joe.

Nice to have this warm reminder of Dale, though I am still reminded of him many times throughout the week when I discover something we might have shared and when I encounter a problem that he would have helped to solve. I literally felt robbed when I learned of his death. He certainly made the world a better place when he was with us.

I just learned of Dale's passing from Arkie and Jeri in another thread. I'm saddened to learn of Dale's passing. All the good comments above were certainly true. I'm grateful that I had a chance to meet him when I did. He was very special, indeed.

Reading this thread also reminds me of the passing of Kat and 'Spaw. Sigh.

I tried to access Dale's Website through a link in another thread, and the link didn't work. The link I posted in the first message of this thread still works. Dale had an interest in a wide variety of songs, and he did interesting pages on a number of them. Take a look at his Website. You'll enjoy it.
