Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 May 11 - 09:26 PM Mary...you're aware that YOU may be Raptured...but your clothes won't be... Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Jeri Date: 20 May 11 - 09:30 PM I don't think animals are allowed, so you may want to hang around... that, plus the whole having to wear your rapture suit thing... |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Bupkes Date: 21 May 11 - 12:06 PM No better place to be than singing with friends while the World Ends, on a high note, too. It's sunny and warm for a change. Looking forward to seeing you all. Marty |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: SINSULL Date: 21 May 11 - 04:51 PM I won't go. The idea of spending eternity with that crackpot preacher. That and the clothes thing. Plus Seamus can't possibly take care of himself and the cats. |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 May 11 - 08:45 PM Good session. Tired. Good tired. Mañana. Glad you're still here, Mary. Uh, he was wrong before... Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 22 May 11 - 09:27 AM The session seemed to keep everyone in raptures. Seldom have I heard such soulful singing. I myself was floundering around for something special to contribute but the best I could come up with was "The Spectral Fishing Fleet," my tribute to the demise of the commercial fishing community of Fleetwood, UK. Other songs I led included: Midwatches by Burt Franklin Jenness Angelina by Mike Kennedy Fire Marengo-TRAD Evening Shadows Fall, my own Mobile Bay by Cicely Fox Smith There was a woman at the session I hadn't encountered before, Diane I believe, who has a fine strong shanty voice. She also led "Martin Said to His Man" and invited us all to contribute verses which was a whole lot of fun. I hope she becomes a regular. For the next Press Room session in June we should be bringing Danny Spooner and his wife Gael along with us. Danny's booked at the Mystic Sea Music Festival and after the Festival we're spiriting him up to Maine where he'll be vacationing and performing a concert at the Maine Maritime Museum/Winter Street Church in Bath on Sunday, June 19th, 7:30 pm. Send me a PM if you'd like concert reservations. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 May 11 - 10:19 AM Charley, Dianne Lavoie was around the Friday session back in the '90s, then was away for awhile, sporadically reappearing. For the past couple months, she's not only a regular at the Friday sessions, but discovered (last month) the shanty session and has been an enthusiastic participant. I'll post the usual play list, etc. starting after I get home from work this evening. Prolly pictures, too (at Facebook). Linn |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Session @ The Press Room (NH) From: Bupkes Date: 24 May 11 - 11:09 AM Linn, at about 5:55 pre-Rapture time, that was "It Soon Be Done" that I felt inspired to contribute. I'd learned it from a New Golden Ring record. and it can be improvised just like Dianne's "Martin Said to His Man": It soon be done with trouble and trial When we meet on the other shore I'm going to shake hands with all of the elders Tell all the people 'good morning' Sit down beside my Jesus Sit down and rest a while It soon be done with weeping and moaningÉ It soon be done with fear and hatredÉ It soon be done with trouble and trialÉ It soon be done with back-talkin' childrenÉ It soon be done with gasoline taxesÉ It soon be done with trouble and trialÉ And my "Portsmouth Town" was of course Peter Bellamy's "Yarmouth Town", Marty |
