The works of Grainger are celebrated at the Proms 2011, on Tuesday 2nd August, at the Royal Albert Hall. Appearing will be The Kathryn Tickell Band, The Wilson Family and June Tabor.

In the past there has been a bit of an uproar on the BBC proms bulletin boards complaining about polluting the purity of the classical music with the decidedly inferior folk so-called-music. Or fulminations to that effect. It will be interesting to see what happens this time.

Speaking for myself, as an occasional attendee at the Proms and much more frequent participant in folk events, I'm very much in favour. It is particularly effective when they take something like 'Lovely Joan' and present it in its folk form then show what Vaughan Williams did with it (as they did on a previous occasion). Both 'camps' can learn a lot from that (such as the idea of that sort of camp is pretty silly in the first place.)

Pat has more or less stopped singing since she had her fall. It affected her memory very badly and I suspect that undermined her confidence. I have only seen her once or twice at the Welly since then and she has only sung the once.

I was talking to Ken the other day and it sounds as if the idea is pretty much what DMcG described. Taking songs that Percy Grainger collected presenting them in their folk form and then performing Grainger's treatment of them. The orchestra is the Northern Sinfonia and some of their members are quite sympathetic to folk, having worked with Alistair Anderson so should be a good night.

AFAIK, the Kathryn Tickell band is Peter Tickell, Fiddle; Julian Sutton, Melodeon and Ian Stevenson Guitar - and Kathryn herself, of course but I wouldn't take that as gospel. It's just that last line up I knew of.

I must make a note so I don't miss it.

On a more or less related subject, I recently archived a 2005 Radio 3 programme where Stephen Johnson discusses some of the imaginative ways in which Percy Grainger and Ralph Vaughan Williams used folk song material in their compositions. He's joined by Martin Carthy, who sings extracts from "Dives and Lazarus", "Come All You Worthy Christian Men", "Maria Marten / The Murder In The Red Barn", "Come All You Worthy Christian Men" (again) and "Star Of The County Down".

I agree with other posts about the beeb recognising and incorporating English Traditional Folk Music into the Proms, psrticularly since Percy Graigner was one of the first to appreciate the choral and orchesteral potential of this previously overlooked genre.
However, I think that it will have truly been acknowledged when The Wilson Family are booked to finish off 'the last night' with their unaccompanied rendition of The Miners Lifeguard in place of Rule Britania/Land of Hope and Glory - it'll never happen but there'll be many out there who wish it would!

If they do any Vaughan Williams they're (likely) doing folk songs already. So the message boards might want to think again before complaining.

Or I could point to other composers that did the same thing.

DMcG I can only agree with you. I have always maintained that classical players should get out more and bring their music into the pubs (trios and quartets etc, not the whole d....d orchestra, or there'd be no room for us!). They're always moaning that nobobody knows about their music.
After all, before concerts were invented (nominally about 1700) them and us were the same people!
