There's a known ongoing problem with Chrome freezing & crashing when opening or closing Youtube
and similar streaming video.

A reasonably effective temp solution that seems to work for the last few days
[as advised on a user forum]
is to navigate to "chrome://plugins" and disable older accumulated versions of 'Flash' and 'Quicktime'.

Reports are that Google has been doing some "revisions" to Chrome recently, largely due to complaints about surreptitious "tracking" of users, some of which they claim was "inadvertent." They've been pretty good about getting good fixes out, but hasty responses do sometimes result in incomplete fixes, or sometimes break something else. Maybe those who haven't seen the problem are just the ones who didn't get the iffy patches (assuming there were any?). Checking for any new patches for a while might be a help ... or not.

Wiki... Statistics show that users are four times more likely to be tricked into downloading malware than be compromised by an exploit.[114] In a 2011 study, Chrome 10 blocked only 13% of malicious URLs, tied for third place with Safari and Firefox. In contrast, Internet Explorer 9 blocked 92% of malware with its URL-based filtering, and 100% with application-based filtering enabled. Internet Explorer 8, in second place, blocked 90% of malware. Exploits that install malware without the user being aware (for example clickjacking and drive-by downloads) were not included in this particular study.[115][116]

Yes Jim, that sounds very sensible and I was glad of IE for a backup this time. Using it now and it seems fine.

I did dump and reinstall Chrome but it didn't seem to make a difference, I think I'll stick with IE for now and try Chrome later on to see if it has been fixed or my machine decides to let it work.

I did have a look at Firefox 'cos a lot of people sing its praises, but I just can't seem to get attached to it in the same way as Chrome, each to his own I suppose.

It might be worthwhile to uninstall Chrome and then reinstall it from a new download.

But before you do that, export your bookmarks so you can import them again after the reinstall.

I'm sure there are several people here who can give you step-by-step instructions if you need them.

People can argue all they want about which is the best browser, but I think the best policy is to have 2 or more browsers installed, so the others will serve as backup in case your favorite stops working.

For a long time I only used IE, but then I found certain websites were very slow to load, like WorldCat.org, which I use a lot. So I switched to Firefox, and later to Chrome.

Lately I have been using Chrome and my wife has been using Firefox. We both like the fact that we can each keep our own bookmarks, startup pages, etc., and not interfere with each other.

Recently my wife noticed that certain websites that she likes make Firefox freeze up, so she switched to IE.

I might be able to fix Firefox, or it might be fixed automatically by future updates, but the nice thing is, there is no urgency, since we have backups.

I've just completed the full scan that John in K suggested and the good news is that it found one contaminated file and fixed it, the bad news is, I thought it had fixed the problem as it seemed ok until I just started to write this post and now it's hanging up and slowing down, even these letters are delayed between the time I hit the key and it gets on screen, so I am typing very sloooooooowly to try and finish this.    GOT THERE! lol

I use Chrome very occasionally, on both a Mac and a PC and it's always worked fine for me. "Occasionally" not because I don't like it, but I'm already settled into Firefox and Safari (on both puters) and don't feel the need to move away from them. But no problems with it -

I'm a recent Firefox convert after years of being a die hard IE user, I've used Chrome fleetingly but it'd take a lot to pry me away from the fox now I'm afraid!

Thanks John, I'll give it a try. At least this time I can understand what you are saying. (not too much technical stuff, with which I usually get lost) :-)

The indication that Chrome worked fine for a while and then began not working as before stringly suggests a change in your computer.

Having stated the ridiculously obvious:

1. With a new browser you may have been playing with settings/adjustments, and inadvertently changed a setting that has affected how it works.

2. With a new browser you may have had things set up so that "external factors" could have changed your computer.

#2 is especially likely if you had to shut down AV etc during installation, and some opening was left accessible. You may also have "wandered" around to try out the new browser, and exposed yourself in places you wouldn't - or wouldn't frequently - go once "down to business."

The report from Microsoft this past week was that one of every 14 downloads is, or contains elements of, malware. Of course they're trying to pitch their new IE8/IE9 XSS blocker, but the report is consistent with lots of malware history. Nobody here is likely to make the kinds of really dumb downloads that "average idiots users" are prone to, so our odds are better; but there's still the possibility ...

Microsoft does have two separate "checkers" for detecting nasties. The regular one is sort of optional if you have other decent AV; but if you're getting unexpected results, one called the Safety Scanner can be downloaded (free) and run, and is reported as doing an excellent job of checking for and removing any common infections. It gives a fairly detailed report of what it finds and what it did (if anything) so it shouldn't surprise you by making unidentified changes to anything. A download is good for 10 days, after which you have to download a new one (to assure current threats are included); but it's about as good as you can get for the crud in current circulation on Windows Machines.

Be advised though, that a "full scan" on my machine took more than 7 hours (I went to bed after that, and it finished "sometime" during my down time. It might have been 12 hr or more, but it checked over 4,000,000 files on my machine - you likely have fewer?) Theres an option to run a "quick scan" that only looks at "likely" points of infection that should be a lot quicker, but I haven't run it.

3. Even if all the programs on your computer were "compatible" when you installed them, Windows updates may have affected "how compatible" they remain now. A misfit can significantly interfere with other programs. There isn't a really easy way to check all the programs you may have on an older OS, but a "cheat" is to run the Win7 Upgrade Advisor Tool. The tool checks all the programs on your computer against a list of known good Win7 programs, and gives you a list of what's questionable. (If it's good for Win7 it should be good for any older, and the tool will identify any "suspects" to reduce the number of things you have to check individually. Running the tool eliminates the need to check the ones it doesn't list as incompatible.)

Neither of these suggested tools should be really likely to find anything surprising; but the things they might find probably need to be excluded so you can quit worrying about them, if you don't find a simpler solution soon.

John

Looking a bit further re my npviewer.bin comments. I had thought it might have been a common Flash problem but it seems this is part of nswrapper rather than flash. The particular problem I've noticed would therefore be limited to 64 bit Linux browsers using 32 bit Flash.

Linux user here. I've had no problems at all with Chrome which atm I'm using about 50/50 with Firefox as 1st choice browser.

I notice you mention the Flash plugin. I don't know what it is like on Win but on Linux, the process which shows up as npviewer.bin can occasionally be horrendous (sort of 98-100%) with its CPU usage. Once in a while I have to kill the plugin's process. This applies to both Firefox and Chrome (and possibly others).

I tried it briefly and then gave up. I can't remember why, but it was unsatisfactory.

Maybe it's just a temporary thing then, I have the latest version and it ran perfectly with the firewall, anti virus etc right up to a couple of days ago.

I did notice that twice it happened and after quite a while it came up with a message across the top that said Flash plugin had crashed.

Don't know if that was anything to do with it though, 'cos after that I ran it again and it was fine for a few hours.

'Fraid all I can say is that Chrome runs like the clappers for me and I've never experienced any of the issues you describe.

Some things to look at: were you running any third-party toolbars, was the Google Updater running on your system and was your Chrome up to the latest version, are there any issues around your particular anti-virus and firewall setup (Google is your friend on that), are you up to date on service packs / updates etc. etc. etc.

Good luck

Yes, I get that problem as well. I also find to input data onto some forums, I have to use IE. I still like Google Chrome though, and suppose in their bid to control the world, they will iron out the glitches!

More so on some things than others, and not often to the extent that I have to switch off the computer.

I switched to Chrome weeks ago and have been very happy with it until a couple of days ago.

It has started going silly, runs ok for a little while then starts to go very slow sometimes taking over a minute to just change pages, then either freezes or tells me that the pages are not responding, do I want to kill them, even if I do click on kill, it doesn't do it.

I can't even do Ctrl Alt Delete, it ignores it.

I thought at first it was my pc playing up so I did all the cleanups etc, but no joy. Today I finally got fed up with it and switched back to I.E. and so far no problems whatsoever, so it looks like it's a problem with Google, which is a shame 'cos I was just getting used to the freedom.

Just wondered if anyone else is experiencing problems.
