A friend is looking for a short song about a man lost at sea that he can sing as a tribute to a friend of his that has recently been lost at sea. A Clovelly lifeboatman as it happens - but his life was not lost in the line of duty. Any suggestions?

"Lowlands Away"?

Ian McCalman and chorus

There are longer versions, but that makes the point.

Ailein Duinn? though it's in gaelic... here are lyrics and translation:

Gura mise tha fo eislean
Moch sa mhaduinn is mi g'eirigh.

chorus: O hi Shiubhlainn leat
Hi rib ho, ho rinn o ho
Aillein Duinn, o hi shiubhlainn leat.

Ma 's'en clusag dhut a ghaineamh
Ma 'se leabaidh dhut an gheamainn.

Ma 's en t-iasg do choinlean geala
Ma 'se na roin do luchd-faire.

Translation:
I am full of sadness
Early in the morning as I rise.

chorus: I long to journey there with you.
Brownhaired Alan, I long to go with you.

The sand is your pillow
The seaweed is your bed.

The fish are the white candles at your deathbed
The seals keep watch over you.

Many thanks, mudcatters - brilliant as ever - and some excellent suggestions! He's now settled on a version of one of the Stormalong shanties.
