Subject: Lyr Add: JOHN HARDY (from Rex Wells) From: Gene Date: 18 Sep 99 - 11:23 PM Here is different version - chords are G/C/G/-/G/C/G/-/G/C/G/-/G/D/G JOHN HARDY Recorded by: Rex Wells Traditional John Hardy were a brave and a desperated boy Said he carried two guns every day Shot his man in the Shawnee Camp And I saw John Hardy get away, poor boy Saw John Hardy get away. John Hardy was a-standing, drinkin' by the bar He were unconcerned with the game When a pretty gal threw down fifty cents and said Deal John Hardy in the game, poor boy Deal John Hardy in the game. SPOKEN Now John Hardy stepped up with the money in his hand Said boys, I've got the money to play And the man that wins this pretty gals' money [sung] I've got the powder to blow him away, poor boy Powder to blow him away. The cards they was dealt and the money on the board Jake Campbell won that twenty dollar bill John Hardy drew his pistols and he took sure aim and fire And he caused Jake Campbell's brains to spill, poor boy Caused Jake Campbell's brains to spill. John Hardy had 12 long miles to go, 6 of them he ran Ran till he came to the White River's bank Then he fell on his bosom and he swam, poor boy Fell on his bosom and he swam. John Hardy came in that long roadhouse Where he thought he'd be out of the way But the marshall stepped up and took him by the hand Said, Johnny come along with me, poor boy John Hardy come along with me. John Hardy was a standin in his cold prison cell With the tears streamin' down his eyres Said sin's the death of many a poor boy Now I'm ready to die, poor boy Now I'm ready to die, Lord, Lord. SPOKEN: Well, they took John Hardy to the buryin' ground Took him there for to die And the very last words John Hardy ever said [sung] My 45, it never told a lie, poor boy My 45, it never told a lie. John Hardy were a brave and a desperated boy Said he carried two guns every day Shot his man in the Shawnee Camp And I saw John Hardy get away, poor boy Saw John Hardy get away. Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: Frank Hamilton Date: 19 Sep 99 - 02:46 PM Paul, John Hardy is a folk song. There are many different variants. I don't know which one Dick used in DT but Lomax has a version in one of his books (I think it's Folksong USA) and there are many. Woody Guthrie also had a version of it. I recorded a minor version many years ago. Which version? Frank Hamilton |
Subject: Chords Add: JOHN HARDY (from Woody Guthrie) From: Colonel KC Date: 19 Sep 99 - 06:43 PM The version I'm most familiar with, the one Woody Guthrie borrowed for The Ballad of Tom Joad, was a pick and strum bass line in C like this: C F C G(all notes on the bottom three strings of the guitar) |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: Paul S Date: 20 Sep 99 - 09:20 AM Frank, The one I prefer, was played by an acoustic blues trio in Peterborough, ON, called Jackson Delta. It was very minor-ish. I'm sure that clears up nothing, right? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: fox4zero Date: 20 Sep 99 - 11:24 AM My favorite version of JOHN HARDY is sung by SARAH CARTER recorded at the Carter Family's first re- cording session in Bristol Virginia in about 1929. It was includud in Harry Smith's Anthology which has been reissued. Smith's recordings opened up a whole new world for me and thousands of others in the early 1950's. Sarah Carter's version is so genuine "old timey" PARISH |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: Frank Hamilton Date: 20 Sep 99 - 04:16 PM Paul, I know the one you mean. The tune goes something like this. g c c a c dd ba g / cc c a cc d / cc c a cc dd ba g/ aa a Bb a f dd f a f d/ aa a Bb a f dd f g/ John Hardy was a desparate little man Carried a razor every day Killed a man down on the West Virginia line Oughta' seen John Hardy gettin' away, Lord Lord Oughta' seen John Hardy gettin' away. I think it's in Lomax's "Folk Song U.S.A." BTW, Woody sang this tune also with a different set of chords but the last line was ended in major like the tune he used for "Tom Joad." Frank Hamilton |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: GUEST,Barny Date: 24 Feb 04 - 01:54 PM I like the version on Martin Simpson's Righteousness and Humidity. Was wondering if anyone knows the tuning Martin uses for this? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: BK Lick Date: 24 Feb 04 - 03:29 PM I believe the one Frank is thinking of is what Art Thieme sings in Jim Hickam's Feb. 7th radio broadacst. You can listen to it here. —BK |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: John Hardy From: Alex.S Date: 10 Jul 04 - 05:26 PM Does anyone have the chords for the version sung by Pete Seeger on "The Essential Pete Seeger?" I don't think it's the standard set of C and G chords because the song sounds distinctly minor. |
