Subject: RE: The Astonishing Mariza (fado singer) From: MartinRyan Date: 23 May 11 - 04:21 AM Was pleasantly surprised to find some pretty gritty fado (in addition to the usual efficient but bland tourist stuff) in Madeira when on holidays there in January 2010, just before the dreadful floods. Here's a rough piece of video I made at the the time: Click here |
Subject: RE: The Astonishing Mariza (fado singer) From: John MacKenzie Date: 23 May 11 - 04:11 AM You need to go to Alfama in Lisboa, or Alfandega in Oporto these days Joe, to hear fado. There is also a style of fado that comes from Coimbra, like this one Don't quote me on the origin of this fado, but I seem to remmeber being told it came from Coimbra, when I lived in Lisboa for a short time. There are lots of other song styles from Portugal, I can reccommend a group called Terra a Terra, who sing wonderful harmonies. Fatima is all about religion, and not a place I would expect to find much secular music. |
Subject: RE: The Astonishing Mariza (fado singer) From: Joe Offer Date: 23 May 11 - 12:32 AM I was disappointed not to hear fado in my two short days in Portugal a couple of years ago. I got to a wonderful Irish session in Fatima, but didn't hear any Portuguese music. I've listened to a lot of fado since then, and I've really grown to love it. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: The Astonishing Mariza From: katlaughing Date: 22 May 11 - 09:43 PM Thanks, Bob. I really enjoyed the last one you posted the link to and, I found THIS ONE which her bio said was a tribute to her African grandmother. I REALLY like that one, esp. She certainly is beautiful and has a powerful presence and voice. |

Subject: RE: The Astonishing Mariza From: Micca Date: 22 May 11 - 06:54 PM Well, she aint Amalia, but is perhaps a worthy successor!! I especilly like her rendition of "Barco Negro" it must have been an electrifying evening of the live performance here in London. |
Subject: The Astonishing Mariza From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 22 May 11 - 06:16 PM I want to bring to your attention, if you've not heard her before, a person I think may turn out to be one of the most memorable singers you have ever seen or heard: Mariza, today's premier singer (in my opinion) of fado — sometimes characterized as the Portuguese equivalent of the blues. Looking through the DT, I've found a few scattered mentions of Mariza. Till now, though, she's had no thread of her own. She deserves one, so here it is. She was born in Lourenco Marques, Mozambique, of Portuguese and African ancestry, which perhaps accounts for her stunning blend of Portuguese style with a kinetic quality I think no previous singer has matched. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariza To my mind Mariza is one of the world's greatest singers and performers ever. Her visual presence is astonishing, her voice mesmerizing. Let me suggest you try a few of her best videos. She's made wonderful album videos, but is best seen in concert, where her command of mood, facial expression and presence are beyond description: Barco Negro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ElLSBx9Jo8 Fado http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OrhFpqCzUE&feature=related Loucura http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiOi_jcmm-Y&feature=related (Hope I've managed to make blue clickies properly above!) Or just enter her name "mariza" at YouTube and explore for yourself. I think you'll find her an inspiring and awesome singer. Bob |
