Hi folks, very pleased to have finally joined the cafe after years of reading it on and off. Last Sunday I played a gig here in London at the George Tavern with a wonderful singer and guitarist called Weston Gavin. He was on the folk scene during the great scare in the 60s but there's almost no info about him I can find online. I'm planning to interview him but was wondering if anyone on here knew him or had any information.

Best wishes,
Willie

Used to see him a lot down Les Cousins way back when - he was noted for his Lord Buckley impersonations, 'The Nazz' especially. I think he had been was still an actor as well as musician - he certainly had a stage presence. Also used to sing 'They call they wind Maria' of 'Paint your Wagon' fame and get away with it - but Cousins wasn't like your average folk club (thankfully). I often wondered what had happened to him, assumed he had gone back to the U.S.A. - he had plenty of talent, it seemed...

Message:
On about 4th September 1965 I organized a Charity Folk Concert in Ampthill Bedfordshire. We had as our main guest Rick Norcross from Vermont U.S.A. He brought Weston Gavin with him and asked if we could give him a spot at the concert, I explained we had a full programme but eventually conceded and said he could have 10 minutes i.e. time for two songs. When it was time for Weston to go on we could not find him. We eventually found him in the toilets gargling with a honey drink, he said he always had to gargle before singing. He then went on stage to do his 10 minute spot, (two songs) however his two songs took over 30 minutes!!! one of his songs was "JUST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE" and I must admit I have never heard a better version of that song before or since then, I can not remember what the other song was. Incidently George Norris and Rick Norcross last year met up with me and my wife Nancy in Spain for a 45 year reunion of the Bedford Clangers Folk Club and played several gigs on the Spanish Costa Blanca. When you meet with Gavin please tell him to get in touch with Rick Norcross (he can google in his name to find his web site) Hope this helps. hga

I remember Weston Gavin from sep 1965,he was singing at the Catholic Club Barton Under Needwood, I thought he was brilliant. He stayed over night at our house and told us that the house was haunted.I remember him peeling the skins of tomato"s.The next day I took him to Lichfield, he insisted in going in the back of my mini pick up with his guitar(you could nt do it these day)he thought it was great. He did say he had special permission to do THE NAZZ.

I remember him from Cousins, and I thank you for reminding me of his name. I have tried for years to remember who it was that did The Nazz there.
It's entirely his fault that I now have 2 Lord Buckley CD's, and occasionally talk about hipsters, flipsters, and finger poppin' daddies.

I knew him in the early Fifties as Jimmy Gavin who was well-liked in our folkie community in Los Angeles and also in New York. His father, not biological, was the jazz recording entrepreneur, Ross Russell who had "Dial" Records and put out early recordings of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Lewis, Bud Powell, Fats Navarro and others.

Jimmy was a nice fellow, amiable and fun. He sort of dropped out of sight, at least for me, and I guess he became the actor Weston Gavin. He was a natural actor in those days. The young folkie girls loved him.

Guest.

I am watching him right now on an old Tales of Wells Fargo episode and his performance is excellent and wonderfully quirky. I IMDB'ed him and see that he didn't do that much acting. Too bad!

The first time I ever saw him was in the movie Superman as the armed alley robber. It was a quirky role, yet otherwise I basically didn't care about any information on him.

But when I first noticed his name in the credits of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, then with noticing his (non-speaking) scene, I was losing my mind! Suddenly, I wanted to know more information about him due to his small participation in two noted franchises of pop culture. In a way, you originally never thought someone would threaten Clark Kent and also later contribute to the construction of the Death Star!

I always thought Melody Maker used to rather take the piss out of him.
