Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 31 Jan 22 - 06:13 AM Sark deserves so much better than the Barsclay brother- at least there's only one now |
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST Date: 12 Aug 21 - 09:55 AM nothing has changed on Sark since Jim B's post 8 years ago- one of the brothers died but Britain has its own non-EU empire now, since Brexit of course |
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST,Pat gaskell Date: 11 Aug 21 - 09:13 PM I used to take the money on the door of the Caesera folk club in St Helier back in the 60’s . Ricky Hudson and Gerry Jackson were there every week. Also Joh Pashley, who I have met up with many times over the years. Sadly he passed away. Loved working there. Used to give out baked potatoes in the interval. |

Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 16 Sep 13 - 02:38 PM Yes, I was at that Alderney club with Ken Lees and Taffy Thomas about 1978 at a guess...the gales had covered the folk club room floor with sand!!- lovely village on an island with a sad wartime history- I recall Taffy describing Alderney after a few Bucktrouts and Hankey Bannisters-'300 alcoholics clinging to a rock'... Played at the Mermaid in Sark several times in the 70s/80s with Ken, Tufty Swift among others but wouldn't dream of going to the folk festival. Island friends tell me that the reign of terror by the Barclay Brothers (not a blues group but a couple of Glasgow thugs who own the Telegraph- DON'T BUY IT!!)) who are trying to take over the lovely island of Sark and create a non-EU empire where they can do as they like, and don't care how they do it. Check it out but have nothing to do with the festival, which is financed by the aforementioned gangsters- read the stories and tell me I'm exaggerating- I'm not! |
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST,GUEST,Fiddlersgreen Date: 15 Sep 13 - 04:49 PM As a long time Alderney resident I can confirm the last Folk Club in Alderney was 1976-1982 and successfully ran (year-round)on a weekly basis in the Sea View Cellar Bar.It was not a strict trad club but welcomed all acoustic music and linked in with Guernsey/Jersey clubs to book acts from the circuit as well as featuring local performers. Nowadays live music(in all forms) is found in different venues on the island and has become even more popular in the last 2-3 years. Rea's Bistro has featured contemporary folk on many occasions and together with both the Performing Arts Fest. and the Wildlife Fest. encouraged performers from the other islands, the mainland and also France. |

Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 16 Sep 12 - 09:43 AM Try asking these guys The Barley Dogs, or if you do facebook find James Dumbelton, Phil Capper or Chris Walden. They run the (mainly singing) club, which was meeting on Wednesdays last year, but they'll know if anything's happening on thursdays these days |

Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 27 May 11 - 08:16 AM Correction by my less senile wife, it's only about 12 years since we were there last. We went about 20 times in the preceding 25 years, usually to the Georgian House after an initial visit to "Blighs", occasionally to Inchalla and once, memorably, with a large party of freidns and relations, to Fort Clonque. Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 26 May 11 - 12:05 PM Oh we don't allow any of that nonsense nowadays (though we take no notice of ourselves, of oucrse). Music has been known in most pubs, the Georgian has concerts (Richard Digance soon), and the Moorings (on the and of Braye St opposite Jeans stores) has regular gigs. The Alderney folk club used to meet in the cellars of the old Sea View (25-30 years ago), which literally open onto Braye Beach. I'm not sure about the bugle. I'll ask my cousin (who is the cleaner) if it's still there. |
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 26 May 11 - 11:49 AM I can remember spontaneous outbreaks of guitar playing and singing in Alderney hostelries by visitors staying at the camp site some years, and Fort Clonque provides Landmark Trust visitors with a piano and bugle! Mind you, it's 20 years since I was last there. RtS |
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 26 May 11 - 09:28 AM Also, no clubs at the moment on Burhou Lihou Jethou Herm Brecqhou Les Ecréhous Les Mîntchièrs Chausey or Les Casquettes. Good fishing though. (They get upset if they are left out) |
Subject: RE: folk clubs in the Channel Islands From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Date: 26 May 11 - 09:22 AM There is a band new club in Guernsey at the Douvres Hotel in St Martins - run by, among others, James Dumbleton of J Causely / J Oates / G Sanderson etc fame, and they tell me they are getting 100+ now. It meets on the last Wed of every month - and I shall be their first guest on the 29th of June. There are regular tunes session in the Blind O'Reilley's and The Cock and Bull too. Alderney does not have a club. We run sessions in the Coronation when we can - though less so since mainstay Eric moved to the UK. If I'm ever there long enough I will start something regular. I am, however, doing a very rare 'proper' gig at The Georgian (in the Orangery) on the 23rd of June (with the Indomitable Ronnie Cairnduff as support). Sark does not have a club, but the festival is getting bigger all the time and is happening at the end of June. Website McGoldrick, Emily Smith, O'Hooley & Tidow, A Chap called Bliss, LOTS of others. Jersey has no club at the moment, but there is a regular session which moves from pub to pub around St Helier. Contact Miles via the boys or girls morris sides and tell him I sent you - he'll know where they are this week. (That Tom Bliss chap is also playing the Medieval Hall at Mont Orgueil Castle in Gory on the 3rd of July). As it happens. Tom |
