Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Donkey City (Calypso) From: MorwenEdhelwen1 Date: 16 Jul 11 - 04:39 AM Myspace Music- Donkey City . Note: the melody is very similar to "Yankee Dollar", the 1946 calypso popularised by Lord Invader. The musical phrases used for the lines "For you're nothing but a donkey, just a silly old donkey" and "And she told me plainly, she love Yankee money" are very similar. |
Subject: Lyr Add: Donkey City From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 May 11 - 09:03 PM Lyr. Add: Donkey City I went to Donkey City, to circumcize my donkey And on the way my donkey met a mule. Said the mule to the donkey, "Saga boy don't you molest me Donkey whoa, don't bother me now, I tell you." Chorus: For you nothin but a donkey, just a silly old donkey And I don't like a donkey when him lookin' so funny. So the mule said to the donkey, "Saga boy don't you molest me Donkey whoa, don't raise up me tail I tell you. Me and me Uncle Willie went to New York City And on the way my uncle met a girl. Said the girl to my uncle "Saga boy don't you molest me Uncle no don't bother me I tell you." Chorus: For you nothin' but a Yankee, just a silly old Yankee. And I don't like a Yankee, when him don't got money. So the girl said to my Uncle, Saga boy don't you molest me. Uncle no, don't bother me now I tell you. So my Uncle Willy feeling rather silly, Went up to the fat toe girl and said. Although I don't got no money yet I love you, love you my honey She said no, don't bother me I tell you. Chorus: For I got it already, and it sweet like a honey It soft like a jelly and it red like a cherry So the girl said to my Uncle, Saga Boy don't you molest me Uncle no, don't tear off my Dr....dr.... dress I tell you! From a little booklet, "Jamaican Calypso Songs," p. 9, printed 1950s, no date, no author. Reproduced at http://www.mentomusic.com/images/jcs9.jpg. Combined in versions of Maryanne, Me Donkey Want Water, Hold 'Em Joe, and other folk, calypso, mento, etc., songs. Maya Angelou (cd still in print), Sir Lancelot, Lord Invader and Lord Fly are among those who sang this under the title Donkey City. Uncertain whether these originated in Trinidad, Jamaica, or elsewhere in the Caribbean area. |
