Oh yes, the Heckety, Diana, Isis etc etc song. Never heard a recording of it thank goodness but I've heard it plenty in singarounds sung by Women (note the capital "w")mostly but also I heard a man once do it. Awful, Awful.

I think many people view Springsteen's "Born in the USA" as jingoistic. I think of it as an anthem of those who had to go into military service during the Vietnam war, whether they wanted to or not.

I am a big, big fan of the late John Denver and also like Bruce Springsteen a lot.

But...there are two songs that I cannot stand to hear of theirs.

John Denver - "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and

Bruce Springsteen - "Born in the U.S.A." (this one the worst of the two).

Those two songs make me flinch.

Ya want something REALLY Flinchworthy? Try anything by William Shatner: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about iconic for "truly horrid recordings"

A more folky sounding album that I found astonishingly awful, and later lampooned by David Letterman is "Lavender Jane Loves Women." I'm, as they say, "straight but not narrow" but lyrics like "let no penis come between us" were just howlers, even to lesbian friends.

I find it interesting that the OP would dismiss ANY recording of "Caledonia" unheard. I happen to like the song m'self, but wouldn't dream of telling her she should be ashamed of herself for such an attitude, the way she did when I found "Danny Boy" avoidable in most instances. Ya like what ya like. I find the "Celtic Woman" avoidable in all instances, though they're impressive for the ability to sing/play fiddle/etc while tight laced in a corset top - eyecandy for PBS membership drive. Not my cuppa.

I wonder what it is with Judy Collins' voice? I've heard her a number of times, mostly in the 70s, when she was on pitch, with a soaring, inspirational voice. At concert in the mid 90s she was sort of all over the place, and I found it disconcerting to hear this voice that had largely launched my love of a number of songs, and singing of them, sound so off. I would likely avoid recent recordings by her for this reason to avoid having to flinch.

My wife told us after the first number that the bass was too loud, so we had him turn down some, and the concert went off fine. The next week the bassist left the band.

I went to the Judy Collins concert once that was so horribly loud I had to leave. People were shouting from audience to turn it down. Did no good.

Every band should have somebody in the audience to report on what conditions are like OUT THERE.

Can't think of any recordings, but I remember going to a Judy Collins concert in the late 70s. Gorgeous voice, of course, but (much to my surprise) frequently off-pitch enough to cause me to wince. Don't know if she was having an off day or what, but I found it hard to believe how bad her pitch was -- and repeatedly.

An aside:
Dave in Michigan, Hi again! Your "clues" in the other thread helped some, but not enough (clearly your memory is better than mine). There are at least a couple of Daves I think you might be, but I am far from sure. (The number of Daves I know is almost amazing. I remember once receiving a holiday card signed simply "Dave". To this day, I don't know who sent it...)

My cat has a distinictive meow which means "Cut that out!" For example, if I'm brushing her and pull too hard on some matted fur, she meows her unmistakeable "Mra!".

She's heard me sing and make music a lot. She usually says nothing. But the other day, I imitated Marie Osmund for the first and last time. After a few bars, the cat walked in and went "Mra!"

Things are bad when even the cat criticizes.

Any recording in which a song traditionally sung "sean nos" (i.e. solo, a capella and almost unmeasured) is "updated" to become up-tempo, accompanied by percussive rhythmic guitar strumming, a chorus, and with vocal syncopation of the "instant catchiness" variety (insert single-beat rest at start of phrase, squeeze words to fit). Urggh.

I was at a workshop once where our teacher, a Welsh musician, commented that he had seen the Chieftains on television "and not one instrument on the stage was in tune with any other."

Their out-of-tuneness gets on the nerves after a while.

I sympathize with your observation of "trying to sound like a pre-teen." That style got old about 1985.

There is one on this Irish Pub Radio that I can not race to the computer fast enough to turn off the speakers...Ennis Sisters with Chieftains singing Red is the Rose...I like both groups in general but somehow that rendition is nerve-wracking for me. Likewise I think any version of Caledonia I have yet to hear. mg
