Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins are now in the midst of a month-long east-coast tour. It's a rare and momentous treat to have them here. For mudcatters on the west coast, Larry Hanks needs no introduction.

For those on the east coast who may need some filling in, I thought I'd share the description we printed for Larry and Deborah's upcoming FSGW concert in Washington:

"Berkeley-based folksinger Larry Hanks has been called a 'folksinger's folksinger.' A legendary figure in the west coast folk scene, he has captivated audiences for five decades with his resonant bass voice, his sparse and tasteful guitar accompaniments and his caring approach to every song. Larry's eclectic repertoire includes traditional, work, blues and political songs, both comic and poignant, as well as songs from figures like U. Utah Phillips, Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Malvina Reynolds and Stephen Foster. Not to mention his prodigious store of cowboy songs and other songs of the American West.

"In this rare east-coast tour, Larry is joined by his wife and singing partner Deborah Robins, who brings her own rich talents to the mix, in both harmony and lead vocals and a second guitar. The two now perform together regularly and have a newly-released CD, 'NO HIDING PLACE,' which is already garnering critical praise.

Larry is a permanent fixture at song gatherings here on the West Coast. Whenever Larry starts to sing, people perk up and listen. He has a head full of great songs, and a wonderful, rich, bass voice.
He's a legend here - go to one of his concerts and find out why. Every song he sings, you're gonna like.

We LOVED Larry Hanks & Deborah Robins! They did a wonderful concert in our barn for a nice turnout of people. Great harmonies; great songs (I loved the funny ones the most). What a great time we had. Love their voices!

I caught Larry and Deborah when they did a house concert for FSSGB on June 4, 2011. They were awesome! Most folks in the room had never seen or heard them before, and many of their songs were new to us, but they were all extremely singable and great fun. (Larry and Deborah were impressed with the FSSGB audience's ability to catch on and join in on everything. ;))

Their performance featured tight, interesting harmonies and strong guitar accompaniment. They developed a great rapport with the audience and preceded each song with informative introductions.

I hope folks who aren't familiar with them will go check them out - especially if you like concerts where you can join in a lot!

Everyone I asked about the spring weekend of the Folk Music Society of NY raved about Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins (and told me I was an idiot to have missed hearing their music and hanging out with these charming people at the weekend). Well, they came to us at the Brooklyn Folk Festival (cosponsored by FMSNY). Gorgeous voices, excellent harmonies, wonderful guitar playing, good songs! We all will get to hear them again at Old Songs.

I just hosted a house concert last night for Larry and Deborah at the behest of Martha Burns. Also, I've known Larry for over 40 years, met him in my California Days (daze?) tho' I haven't seen him for a very long time. It was wonderful to see and hear them, get to know Deborah a little bit. I love the body of songs they do, songs from the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, U. Utah Phillips. He plays the hell out of the jews harp, they both play guitar with cogent simplicity. If you have the opportunity to see them you will not regret it!

Larry and Deborah got a standing ovation and TWO - yes, TWO -- encores tonight at their Washington-area concert for FSGW. Can't remember when THAT's ever happened before! We'll be talking about this concert for a long time to come.

It was indeed a great evening. By 'mingling' at a nice potluck dinner before the concert, we felt like we knew them by the time the concert started, and thus felt free to kibitz..(well, several HAD known them for years). Any time a 'concert' feels a lot like just singing with friends, it is a fine time!

   (and I have to admit, there WERE several songs I/we didn't know. *grin* The Idaho settler song was a treat.)

Enjoy Old Songs, Larry & Deborah, and come back this way some time!
