Subject: Jean Ritchie update June 2011 From: GUEST,Mary Katherine, sans cookie Date: 03 Jun 11 - 10:13 AM Based on the discussion about the passing of George Pickow, I thought I should update you about Jean Ritchie. After over 50 years of living here in Port Washington, Jean has returned to her family in Kentucky, living in Berea. However, shortly after she moved in early May, she fell and hurt her hip, so she's now in a rehab facility, and will hopefully return to Berea in a few weeks. Her son Jon is going down to Kentucky for the summer, and he can fill you in on her progress. Jon can be reached at JPickow@aol.com . The house is almost on the market, pending some zoning approvals from the village. Feel free to call or write if there's any other information I can provide. And we're all grateful that Jean's papers are at the Library of Congress. You don't know what true southern hospitality is til you have been welcomed by these extremely talented and kind people. I miss the family; and to our dear Jean,I hope you are healing and doing well- please never stop singing and playing dulcimer. The porches of Kentucky await your return. |

Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie update June 2011 From: GUEST,Robert Date: 25 Aug 11 - 01:11 PM Thank you Mick, and everyone else. When I had just got out of hospital myself, Jean sent me the most beautiful card and letter. We had met several times over the years, and talked on the phone. You are all right, she is very, very much top shelf in music. I have always been proud that I can say I know her. It might sound a little old fashioned, even nostalgic, to say that it seems we are all "family" here--Jean, if you are reading this, you are so, so loved and admired by all! |
Subject: RE: Jean Ritchie update June 2011 From: Big Mick Date: 29 Sep 11 - 05:55 PM What a lovely afternoon I have just had with our Jean and son Jon. And I am elated to tell you she is doing VERY well. I walked in the door and was greeted by those beautiful twinkling eyes, gorgeous smile, and big hug. For those of you who know Jean, let me assure you that she is doing great. She is in a wheelchair for the time being due to a hip break, but other than that she is great. We had coffee and banana bread fresh baked by my wife, and then we swapped songs for a bit. She and Jon did several together, and she harmonized on several of mine. She did tire after a bit, but it was, simply put, a wonderful time with this grand lady and friend. It put my mind at ease. Jon is in fine voice and it was a joy listening to his songs and jokes. And he an do a passable SE Ireland brogue. ***chuckle*** All the best, Mick |
