Subject: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions
From: Nancy King
Date: 05 Jun 11 - 02:37 PM

Planning for the 2011 Folklore Society of Greater Washington Getaway weekend is already underway, and we're ready for your input!

This year's Getaway will be September 30 - October 3 at the West River Conference Center on the Chesapeake Bay, and you're all invited!

If you'd like more information about the Getaway, put "Getaway" into the filter box at the top of the Mudcat forum page, set the age for two or three years, and you'll get more than you can possibly read. In a month or so, there will be additional information, and an application form, on the FSGW web site (www.fsgw.org).

One of the cool things about the Getaway is that we really try to tailor each year's program to the interests and talents of those who will be attending. But we can't do that until we know who's coming and what they're interested in doing. The Program Committee -- Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), long-time FSGW member and Getaway-goer Kathie Mack, and I -- have been working on a fine lineup of guests. We have confirmed Sally Rogers, Joel Mabus, David Jones, Magpie (Terry Leonino & Greg Artzner), Nick Apollonio, Michael & Carrie Kline, and Mark Ryer. And who knows? There may even be one or two more. Now we're starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've already thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions!

So, if you're planning to come, let us know that, and tell us what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops from previous years you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only two days, after all, so please do not assume that just because an idea's been discussed here, it will ipso facto be on the program), we can assure you that all ideas will be given due consideration. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me.

To keep things manageable, please reserve this thread for program ideas -- other Getaway topics should be posted elsewhere. Thanks.

The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now!

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Nancy

Hello, Nancy!!

I plan on coming--Gawd willin' and the bills don't rise.

I'd like a five-string banjo workshop, a Travis-picker's workshop, and a good old IRish songs from all over round. If I'm lucky I'll get to hear David Ingraham's EanNos singing at it. ANd I think I'd like on on old-timey music, the roots of ragtime.

Let me know if you want me to do anything meself,. also. Always game.

Regards,

A

What about "Music of Iceland"; "Songs to Light the Darkness"; "New Songs Born From the Old Traditions"; "Cool, Clear, Water"; "Follow This".

Have fun!

Nancy,

Well, some of the usual local suspects are probably still recovering from the weekend. 8-)

Would folks be interested in hunting songs? I was thinking of suggesting a workshop on the topic, with the title of "Wabbit Season! Duck Season!"

Hmm...I don't know any songs about mythical creatures, do I? >:->

Look at that list of guests! WOW.

A couple of things come to my mind - with Terry and Greg there, perhaps a workshop on civil war songs, or songs of liberation might be in order. Also animal songs.

A few years ago I led a workshop on Farmers, Fieldhands and Fishermen. I wouldn't mind reprising that, or leading a workshop on farming songs, or fishermen.

Songs of new England and the Maritimes might be good.

Best Getaway ever, that's my prediction.

Hey Skarpi, good to hear from you! Sure hope you can make it to the Getaway -- we'd love to see you again! I expect we'd even rise to your challenge of learning to sing in Icelandic!

The Getaway is Friday evening September 30 through Monday morning October 3, at West River Conference Center on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I'm sure we can arrange for someone to pick you up at either Washington National (which some folks call Reagan) Airport, Dulles Airport, or Baltimore/Washington Airport. If you can manage to get to one of those, we'll work out the rest. And yes, of course, you can bring a friend. As you know, scholarship money is available -- just contact Charlie Baum about that.

Hope it works out at last!

Nancy,

I plan to be there and I am willing to help out any way that I can. Joel Mabus, huh? One of my fold kmusic heros. I even think Marge may attend (I know you would have asked). Am trying to interest some people from the Northern Neck to take a trial run at a Getaway. Music can get mighty lonely down here some times. I just caught this thread (limited computer access) so I will try to think up some good workshops.

Micca -- Oh no! We'll surely miss you! We were going to ask you if there was some other topic you'd like to lead, other than parodies or songwriters. Guess we'll have to wait till next year!

Guest Babypix -- we did consider Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins, but since they made a rare trip east just this month, we figured they wouldn't be able to come back so soon. Our guest roster is full right now, but Larry and Deborah will be on the list of folks to be considered for next year.

Guest XXX -- What's your problem?? We think the facilities at West River are pretty good -- certainly better than those at our previous camp.

Others -- thanks for the suggestions! We'll consider them all (but no promises, of course). Keep the ideas coming, please!

Faithful Dogs and Horses? Enforcement of the Law? The coming of roads and other transportation changes and updates? Pre-1960's drug songs through history? Footwear? Rescues? Diseases and Cures?

More ideas in detail hopefully to come soon......

Interesting ideas, Saul -- but we now have more ideas floating around than we have time available at the Getaway, so we'll have to put those on the back burner. Maybe next year.

The program is slowly coming together -- we won't have a schedule grid until mid-September or so, but the workshop lineup looks pretty good so far. There are still too many things hanging fire to post a list at this point, but we'll get there eventually.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

I guess the suggestion box is closed by now but here's one anyway.

Unrelieved "dark" ballads/songs. There's 1,000's to pick from so the darker the better. Easy examples - the hero dies, mother kills the babes, vital battle is lost, no one escapes the plague, door is locked during the fire, etc. Serious, travesty or parody.

(Sigh.) It happened again.   I posted yesterday about a program suggestion, and the post DID go through, but it's now disappeared.   This is happening too often and it's wearing me down.

Thanks, Abby. I tried several times but couldn't make the link work -- always worked before, but couldn't do it this time. Anyhow, there it is. Abby's link takes you to Saturday's schedule, and there is a link at the top of that page that takes you to Sunday. As in the past, Dean has worked his magic so that as you hold your cursor over the schedule, the short descriptive blurbs about each workshop appear.

We're quite pleased with the schedule. It's very full, of course, but that's a good thing, right? Better too much than too little. Take a good look -- if you are a workshop leader and we have you scheduled in two places at once, let us know NOW and we'll fix it. If you simply want to be in two (or more) places at once, well, join the club.

If you still haven't registered for the Getaway, there's still time -- but do it soon! You can go to www.fsgw.org (I've given up trying to do links today...), scroll down just a bit and click on "Fall Getaway." You can register on line or print out the form and mail it in.

We have a wonderful lineup of invited guests this year, and anticipate a great weekend. See you all there!

Genie -- obviously it's too late for more program ideas for this year, but do let us know your idea and we'll note it down for consideration for next year.
