Hi,

Gill and I saw you at the Black Horse, on the Sunday at Chippenham, but missed your song, unfortunately.
For the record, I really like your voice. I might have been guilty of chivvying you too much to sing, in the past at The White Horse Festival. (25 years since The first Stanford in the Vale this year!!). I will try to wait and see this year.

The gist was... just have fun... it get's easier. Just don't give a hoot. Just have fun and don't give a hoot. It really is that simple even tho it doesn't seem that easy.

I have trouble telling myself that again after some "troubles" with my voice, so I know how daunting it is.

Just do it and whatever happens happens. If ya don't... nothing will happen.

Well done Skipy, you're over the hard part. It gets easier from now on - believe me. Not only that but you will also find that, over time, you will actually improve - probably much to your own surprise.

For me singing in a folk club is not a problem or even at a festival singaround where I know nobody. It's singing at home. My wife and daughter are my severest critics by a long way - and they complain that I only ever sing miserable songs.

It's folk, for goodness sake! What do they expect?

We sang as a foursome "Many a Mickle" last weekend, at the Fete de la Morue at Binic. Pete and I have been singing for 30 years+, but Carol and Colin have only been singing with us for a year. Before the concert, we went for a snack in an establishment where there were sea-songs printed on the placemats. We offered (more in hope than expectation) to 'sing for our supper', but were taken up on it. A four-part rendition of 'Yeller Girls' earned us free drinks and stopped the passers-by. More to the point, Colin remarked that he was completely gobsmacked, and would never have dreamed a year ago that he could have done that!!

WELL Done, now you know what you have to do......do it again....you will be fine.

As for me, I never really ever felt like you. I just wanted to sing and I joined a band ( I could play the guitar a bit). The problem for me was not the singing but the playing with "real" musicians but they made me welcome and I soon got into the flow.

I think nerves are something that everyone has to some degree. The trick is learning to control them. I got nervous before each performance but I found the nerves helped me concentrate and built me up ready to sing.

After many years with different outfits playing different styles of music I came around to singing solo in folk clubs and concerts.

I was as nervous on the last day that I performed as I was on every other occasion, I still sing but now only at home to family and friends.....and even they make me nervous!!!

I must have been mad !!!

Keep it up you will enjoy it more as you go along.

I gave up singing in 1983 because I had dreadful stage phobia, much as I loved to sing, the fear and effort involved in just doing one song just wore me out! Then 5 years ago I resolved I had to beat it. It meant 'dying' several times but with lots of encouragement from the folk club I peresevered. 5 years later i HAVE beaten it, o I still get a few butterflies here and there but that's very normal i.e I only know of one performer who doesn't get some nerves. I now co run a folk club. have done a few 30+ minute showcase spots, and just back from Ireland where I sing and play at the best sessions. So stick with it, practising your breathing is my top tip, don't take it too seriously, and practise often. Good luck

Well done! For what it's worth, try singing to any babies and toddlers you have in the family (anyone too young to understand the words). They will smile and enjoy it and you will gradually get used to being listened to. I don't claim to be a good singer, but I found singing to my own children reduced my nerves a lot.

GOOD FOR YOU ... Skipy. I well remember the fear (panic) when I was pushed on stage at 14. I'm loooong past 14 now, and I devote a lot of my time to helping beginning singers. It ain't easy, but with practice, tenacity and dedication to yourself ... it will get easier and easier.

O/k, no big deal, you might say! Big deal for me though! For all you singers who take it in your stride please be aware that there are those of us out there who face issues about singing a song, because I am on a high since I sang I can talk about it. I have sung a few in the past & have always suffered "flashbacks" if these occur during driving they could be fatal! My fear of singing is enourmous but my desire to is almost as great, so with the help of 2 good friends last weekend I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully I will sing again, I aim to do so, it is so easy to practice a song for weeks on end at home & then say "pass" at a singaround! Thank God for the likes of Tony (& you know who I mean, who will ask & take no for an answer without pushing it).
Time will tell.
