Subject: Folklore: Best shanty and sea songs singers now?
From: GUEST,Warren Fahey
Date: 08 Jun 11 - 09:16 PM

I am attempting to establish who are the world's current best/leading singers of sea songs and shanties.

I am looking to the possibility of a maritime festival in Sydney and open to suggestions for suitable performers. Any nationality.

Mudcat's own Chantyranger and Radriano are excellent performers, but also have done mighty work in researching and bringing to life lesser known (and previously unknown) shanties and sea songs. Go here and listen:

Well, there's The Roaring Forty of Sydney, Australia

Bob Zentz from Norfolk, Virginia.

Certainly Gordon Bok from Maine

The Johnson Girls from New York City

Peter Kasin and Richard Adrianowicz from San Francisco

Liverpool Forebitter (Andy Kenna)

Danny Spooner from Victoria, Australia.

The Maritime Crew from Auckland, New Zealand

I could probably rattle off another hundred or so if you'd like.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

UK of course The Keelers and all their individual members!

Kimbers Men, Graham Knights

WE do of course have a set of Shanty singers who have entered main stream from Cornwall and making £millions, now what do they call them?

Lots more to come I reckon

Totaly agree with you Ray about The Keelers and Kimbers Men, both as groups and individually are excellent, that Cornish lot are more like a choir, and not a good one at that.

The Young'uns (UK) and Brasy (Poland). Both do more than Sea Songs but do Sea Songs very well indeed.

Young and dynamic as well!

Jim Mageean from near Newcastle upon Tyne has to be the finest exponent of this genre that I have come across in a great many years. He is also a wonderful man as well.

Have to mention Three Sheets to the Wind, where you have a great trio and get three great solo singers in Keith Kendrick, Geoff Higginbottom and Derek Gifford.

And they'd love to come to Australia

All the instruments used by The Boat Band just interfere with the song and are extremely irritating, it just seems to be a case of ' we've got the instruments, so we'll jolly well use them, ' shanty's don't need musical instruments.

I definitely like Gibb Sahib's approach, definitely shanties and sea songs without the bullshit. I'd love to see him as a performer at some of these shanty festivals. I'm not sure how what he does would translate from the youtube video into a live performance, I can imagine him grabbing audience members to get them to join in and stuff (in the same way as he's done with friends and family on his youtube videos).

John Conolly and Shanty Jack from Grimsby/Cleethorpes and our own Roaring Forties from the same area, roughly

No other areas of UK have their favourites

I don't think you'll find many Maori shanty singers and very few Maori sea songs. The better known ones owe a lot to the popular songs of the period.
