I don't think you'll find many Maori shanty singers and very few Maori sea songs. The better known ones owe a lot to the popular songs of the period.

Does Dave Brannigan still sing that type of song? He's not so far from you. And if you can find Mike Stanley, he used to be one of our best shanty leaders. He left NZ for Perth many years ago but I don't know where he is now.

Thank you to JimP and Charley Noble for mentioning us!

We are Peter Kasin and Richard Adrianowicz. We are based in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been singing and recording shanties many years now (we're recording a fourth album right now). JimP was kind enough to give a link to our albums at CD Baby (see above). We would love to visit Australia.

Discography:
TIME ASHORE IS OVER(recorded by Richard in 2002)(search CD Baby under Adrianowicz to find this one.
BOLDLY FROM THE WESTWARD (our 1st album together, 2005)
CAST OFF EACH LINE (our 2nd album, 2006)
WITH SHIPMATES ALL AROUND (our 3rd album, 2010)

I definitely like Gibb Sahib's approach, definitely shanties and sea songs without the bullshit. I'd love to see him as a performer at some of these shanty festivals. I'm not sure how what he does would translate from the youtube video into a live performance, I can imagine him grabbing audience members to get them to join in and stuff (in the same way as he's done with friends and family on his youtube videos).

All the instruments used by The Boat Band just interfere with the song and are extremely irritating, it just seems to be a case of ' we've got the instruments, so we'll jolly well use them, ' shanty's don't need musical instruments.
