Is there enough interest to hold Sunnycamp again in October..Long Beach Peninsula (near Astoria). Because there has been a sea shanty camp that occurs around the same time, we are considering (I am anyway) combining the two somehow..in terms of food and lodging..probably the shanty camp would be held nearby but not at the camp. And we would make it clear that sunnycampers would have the main use of the lodge with the fireplace. Someone else would make the musical arrangements for shantycamp..and I would be involved in it and probably gone most of Saturday.

There has always been a need for accomodation for people who want to attend the shanty camp..we could do Sunnycamp and/or Shantycamp for around $50..$55 per head. Costco camp food with local foraging available. mg

Weekend might have to be 21 and 22 October...not as good weather wise usually.

There is a video about the area. mg

Don't even think oh what a pretty bay..I will bring my sailboat/kayak or whatever. Not a chance..it is too dangerous. People get swept out to sea and the camp will not want the liability. mg

Would the Sunnycamp lodging and music sessions be at the same place as the last year of Sunnycamp?

I'd be interested and I do have that weekend available so far. You might want to send feelers out via PFS and SFS too (if you haven't already).

Same place...could you sound it out in Portland...if shanty camp does not happen I would rather have it weekend of October 8 and 9 because weather would likely be better. mg

Please send me any info you would like announced at the Strawberry Social later this month or at the PFS song circle in July or at the Woody Guthrie birthday bash on July 17. Not sure I can make that latter one, but I should be at the other two.

Well, it is official..we are having it, most likely Oct 8 but some people would rather it is Oct 15. I believe we could accomodate the Jewish holidays that some people are celebrating, but not in a Kosher way in the kitchen. Let me know if that is a factor.

I did honestly address the blue book question, as I wish others would do when announcing their camps. Whatever preference the leaders have is fine..it is good to let people know what it is..and in this camp, there are not many places to accomodate lots of different musical styles and I have a strong interest in not having the evening song circles (and this is my only concern really) taken up with the blue books. Likewise, if someone wants to set up a camp that focuses on them, if I come I will totally respect that preference.

Genie and others..could you please passs the word around...

SUNNYCAMP 2011

October 8-9*, 2011
*(unless demand is for October 15-16 and camp is available)

After a several-year hiatus, during which a Sea Shanty Camp was run by Parks Department, Sunnycamp will be returning to Camp Morehead in Nahcotta Washington (north end of Long Beach Peninsula, SW Washington). It is about 3.5 hours from Seattle, and 2.5 from Portland. We have had people from Canada and California attend.

It is primarily a camp for people who enjoy group singing of traditional music. It is similar in design, but on a smaller scale, to camps such as Rainycamp, Singtime Frolics and Camp Alexandra. There will be workshops during the day on Saturday and on Sunday morning on a variety of topics. There will be ample opportunity for people who enjoy singing from books such as "Rise Up Singing" during the day, but the evening song circles will be in the more traditional format sans book, other than if the leader of the song needs it for his/her personal reference. One building will be set aside in the evening for people who do prefer singing from this or other books, but it will not be the main lodge. Another building will be set aside for instrumental jams. Because it is a small facility, there are not as many breakout places as we would like, but there are advantages to that.

The facility is modest, but the setting is very beautiful, right on the shores of Willapa Bay, and about 2 miles from the ocean. It is a perfect place for photography, animal watching (deer are very common, as are bears), hiking and biking, as the terrain is very flat. It looks ideal for boating, but this will not be permitted, due to the dangerous water conditions. Children who attend must be carefully watched at all times.

The camp consists of a main lodge with a nice fireplace, and a good enough kitchen. There are a cluster of cabins with simple camp beds, and there is a divided bathroom facility for men and women. Meals and most workshops and the evening song circles and concert will be in the main lodge. There are two other buildings that can be used for the breakouts of people who prefer singing from the blue book and for instrumental jams. There are two small cabins that can be used by people with special needs.

There is a field for parking RVs, but there is not electricity to them. If you need electricity, it would perhaps be possible to park one near a cabin and run an extension cord, but arrange for that in advance please.

Cost is very reasonable: $55 for the weekend, including all meals. It can be prorated for shorter stays. Children will have better rates. There will be camperships available in exchange for cleanup etc., but final cleanup will be done by a paid professional so that we can enjoy ourselves without worrying too much about cleaning.

Food will be pretty standard camp food and we will cook it ourselves and clean up etc. after. We have always had pretty good meals, and some fancy dishes. Please bring any harvest bounty you might want to share. There can be no obvious and certainly no excessive alcohol. We hope to have our traditional salmon dinner on Saturday. We can accommodate most vegetarians, but if you have special dietary needs, please bring your own food and cook it out of the way of the main proceedings. We can adjust your payment if you don't eat.

There also is a motel next door for those who might want to eat with us and not sleep on the rustic camp beds and have communal bathrooms etc. We can also adjust payment. We can also offer day rates for local people, but we have to charge a few dollars for a meal as well as a few dollars for an entrance day fee.

Friday will be a potluck so just grab something on the way if you are traveling from a distance. There is a great little county store a few miles away that has most of the basics.

Please contact Mary G. at 360-642-8049 or mgxxxxxx@yahoo.com for more information. Please let me know right away if the weekend of October 8-9 works better than October 15-16, as it is possible to still switch, I think.

It is official that October 7-9 weekend will be the weekend. I have a commitment the following week and then the weather just gets too stormy.

If a moderator sees this and can change the title that would be good..Sunncamp October 7-9 2011

This will be in Nahcotta, Washinton USA at north end of Long Beach PENINSULA. NOTE: PLEASE NOTE;;;; THIS IS NOWHERE NEAR OCEAN SHORES. IT IS HOURS AND HOURS AWAY. YOU MUST GOOGLE THIS AND UNDERSTAND IT IS AT THE SW CORNER OF WASHINGTON NEAR THE COLUMBIA RIVER. EVERY TIME PEOPLE DRIVE TO OCEAN SHORES...NOWHERE NEARBY.

I apologize for not being able to accomodate very well the people who prefer the book singing to bareback style. The size of the camp just does not allow for a lot of breakout groups, although an OK but not great building will be reserved. THere will also be workshops during the day for those who prefer this style. People can still use books for their personal reference, but during the main song circles, which is the reason I go to these camps, I prefer it the way it was done for decades at these camps and hope to accomodate others who prefer it this way also.

I'll pass the word around at PFS song circle this coming Saturday and at the SFS song circle and potluck the following evening.   If you can make up a one-page flyer in PDF format and email it to me I can pass them out.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it, as it's right up against my travel for Getaway (but if I can carpool with someone from Portland maybe I can).

Genie

Oh, and I've taken the "???" out of the subject line in my post. Guess we should take them out of the main thread title too, since this is definite now.

Sounds great..I bet there will be a ride from Portland...let's try and talk David into it..I will make up a PDF...

If any moderator is able to change title, and in fact delete the first few confusing posts, that would be great. Thanks...mg

Well, David's also going to Getaway but maybe he's coming back soon enough to be up for driving to Sunnycamp.

(If you PM Joe O or a clone and ask them to edit the thread & title, they may get the request sooner.)
