Subject: Camsco Weekly Catalog - Sept 99
From: Joe Offer
Date: 20 Sep 99 - 03:03 PM

Instead of having a new thread for every week, Wally is going to keep this one thread going as kind of a cumulative catalog. Let's limit this thread to just that. Comments are welcome, but kind of keep them limited so this thread will be a single, useful resource. If people post responses that don't fit that purpose, I'll move them over to another thread. Thanks.

DiGiuseppe, David

  • WIZ 579, Welcome To Heaven, $14.98 (Dance)

"Boy, can this guy play! Some people can fake a chord or two on the piano accordion, maybe play a little harmony, but David DiGiuseppe has done his homework, chosen some great material, assembled a bunch of flexible and talented sidemen and the result is captivating...(T)here is a wide and stunning array of music represented here...DiGiuseppe handles them all deftly.
    BR>

...The arrangements are right on the money for the particular appeal of each tune, and DiGiuseppe resists the impulse to go over the top with so much talent at his disposal. The angels don't get much better than this."
    BR>

The Amidon seniors (Peter and Mary Alice) have a new CD, too, don't they, Wally? Do you have it, as well?

Shop: Ballads , GOLDEN RING

Sandy,

Peter and Mary Alice released "Hymns & Ballads" about a month ago. It's got some stuff by the two of them and other material with their kids, Sam and Stefan and Jennifer Armstrong and her daughters, Georgia Rose and Suzannah.

We've been buddies with Peter and MA ever since we met at your place for the Golden Ring of Gospel recording sessions in 1980. Good folks, great kids and not a small amount of talent.

I was listening to it today, Wally. I don't like to play favorites (except with people like Vera Hall, Mississippi John, Alfred Karnes, etc.), but I think this is the best CD Peter and Mary Alice have done. Excellent! Nice bio-degradable package, too.

Sandy

Dixon Brothers, The
DOCU 8046, Complete Recorded Works, vol. 1, 1936, $15.69 (Old Time)
"Dorsey Murdock Dixon was born in the mill town of Darlington, SC, in October 1897, the first son in a family that eventually numbered seven.... Leaving school in the fourth grade, Dorsey Dixon began his long career as a textile worker at the age of 12 in the mill where his older sister Nancy was already employed. Nancy had begun work as a spinner at the age of eight. She earned less than half a dollar a week.... Howard, Dorsey's younger brother... followed him into the mills at the age of ten and remained a fixer until his death in 1961. During World War I, both brothers were employed as signalmen on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Laid off in 1919, they were forced to return to mill-work.

Two years after he began work, Dorsey started to learn the guitar; and about the same time he began to learn the violin... Later, when Howard was also playing the guitar, the brothers formed a fiddle-guitar duet and played at local functions around Rockingham, where the family were now living.

Surprisingly, it was not until he was 32 that Dorsey wrote his first song. This was "The School House Fire"... based on a Cleveland, SC, tragedy in 1923, in which 76 children died. Howard set the words to the tune of "Life's Railway To Heaven," and the brothers performed the song as a vocal duet. Realising that he had a talent for composition, Dorsey began to create the songs which so well reveal the feelings of a hard-working, God-fearing millhand." - MIKE PARIS, "The Dixons of South Carolina,"
