We have a new venue for house concerts - this one is in Portland, Maine and adds to the venues already provided by SINSULL and TRUBRIT.

Tony Bird will be performing - time to be announced once I have sorted out details.

This is what his agent sent to me when she suggested that we might book him.

Tony Bird was one of the first white African folk singers to come out of southern Africa, pre-dating Johnny Clegg and Paul Simon with his now historical song, "Sorry Africa." This eventually led to his being introduced by Pete Seeger at a Harvard University divestment concert against South African Apartheid.

Bird has resided in NYC since 1980 and has played the international folk circuit since the early '70s, including established folk festivals in England, Europe, Canada and the US. Originally pegged as a southern African folk singer upon his arrival to these shores, he has grown into a diverse and contemporary international songwriter of the times. Though his recordings feature other musicians, he's just as, if not more compelling as a current solo artist.

An informative Tony Bird fan website with a link to MP3s is www.mangotime.net.

Tony Bird is great! I saw him in the late 80s at the Home County Folk Festival in London, Ontario.

Sunday July 10th. Concert starts at 3.00pm. Pot luck desserts for the interval. Some beverages but you can bring your own if you wish.

I already have four people confirmed as coming.

PM me for the address and directions.

Mary - I'll let you know about chairs once we have an idea of numbers.

It's Mango time...

ChanteyLass, I have passed along your greetings via email, having forgotten to do so in person. I had skipped out on potato planting, so was hurrying to get back home.

Thank you to everyone involved for a wonderful afternoon. It's been a number of years since I had an opportunity harmonize to Tony's songs, and it brought back many happy memories. The hostess and house were charming, the music interesting and well performed, and the company excellent. Thanks to my TrueLove for making it possible for me to drive down.

Tomorrow it's back to the potato planting and house building; tonight was a welcome escape.

Maeve

It was lovely to see you there Maeve and I am so glad that you enjoyed it so much.

Our new house concert hosts, Regi and Steve, have a beautiful home and made us all so welcome. I am very glad that their first concert went so well.

Tony's music was a real departure from our usual performers and an interesting insight into his childhood home in Malawi. Both he and his companion were impressed with the number of people attending - their NH venue the night before didn't reach the same number - we had about twenty people in all.

What a strange and wonderful afternoon of music. Tony's songs and delivery are a far cry from traditional New England folk. His African roots pervade his music. That said, the stories told were beautiful and universal. Rogue elephants, racial hatred, simple love stories. His tribute to Odetta is brilliant. Easy choruses.
Lovely harmonies from the back of the room.
Regi and Steve's home is beautiful and welcoming. They seemed to enjoy the event as much as their guests. I hope so. It was a thoroughly enjoyable performance.

I sure wish I lived closer to the Maniacs - I really enjoyed the house concert that I did there along with Tom Martin, and I wish I could attend some of the wonderful events that they organize. What a magnificent bunch you all are!
