I've heard this verse from several sources as part of the floater-fest "Madam I'm A Darlin'", but it's not in the DT version.
Anyway, what does this verse mean?

"Blue, it is a lovely color
Until it gets the second dip
That's the way with an old man courtin'
You'll never know if you get the fit"

(asking, despite a vague suspicion that I don't really want to know...)

Thanks, mg
I thought maybe it referred to dyeing. But if the color is lovely after one dip, why would the dyer dip it again?
And what does it have to do with the old man, and what is the 'fit'?
I think I've also heard this as 'get the auld fid,' which brings up an entirely different mental picture.
Any more ideas, particularly on the connection between dyeing and the old man's, er, um...?
