Hello

I'm asking for anyone who took videos/pictures of the two girl bagpipers/flute players in the sun inn on saturday afternoon. Friday night at the tiger or Sunday anytime.

Or in beverley the three buskers, two female and male (bagpipes & bodhran)

We're collecting them for our website, as alot of people took pictures of us. :)

Aha! So that's who you are! I was the bloke sitting opposite you with a melodeon or three on Sunday early evening. I had just walked past a massive queue for some concert or other, with no idea I was about to hear the best music of the festival played by young people I'd never seen or heard of, in a pub! Made a nonsense of the festival in some ways, except you wouldn't have been there I guess! You made me feel like I'd just reached the end of years of crawling on hands and knees through a desert of relentless conveyor belt celtic reels. What a breath of fresh air you are! SUCH a pleasant change to find younger folk exploring other music, and above all the wonderful harmonic possibilities that arise when music is slowed down, and then exploiting them so beautifully! I did take a pic, but it's not worth having, against the window 'n all. I'll be looking out for you though!

My Fiancé (one of the flute players) sits here so happy that somebody appreciates our music, and our arrangements of traditional tunes!
We enjoyed your melodeon playing, there were tunes that we wish to learn, however we didn't know the name of them :(
If you could sent any dots (sheet music) our way, we'd love to learn!

We however couldn't afford the expensive ticket prices of the festival (besides seeing Michael McGoldrick), so all weekend we had been busking, and practice. as well as going to sessions at the tiger, the sun and the session tent.

Hopefully get an artist pass next year, so we don't have to pay :P

Particularly in the world of folk music, and especially these days, the only respect in which many of the 'Big Names' are superior to what can be found in any town is in their marketing skill.

I agree, and that's why the underrated artists can't get their music appreciated or even recognised (until deceased often)

Which is a shame, however we just busk our own compositions and our arrangements of other songs.

and along the way if people appreciate it, then it's a better feeling than earning a fortune!

Defining folk music is complex, but for me it boils down to 'if you're paying for it, it isn't folk, it's showbiz".   You more than deserve artistes' passes next year. Festival organisers should be hunting out their local talent a lot more to give their festivals their own unique character, instead of simply recirculating the same old acts time and time again - but it's bums on seats and back to money and showbiz again!

How many times can Martin carthy (sorry just not a fan) be circulated from gig to gig, We went to Ryedale folk festival and it's always the same acts at every festival. Plus one really good one that's unusual.

Hopefully, we'll apply anyway and hope for any form of a gig, we just love doing what we do. :)

Hi - couldn't agree more! my little trio (Gone to the Dogs) have been together some 3 years now playing our own arrangemants of mainly Irish trafditional tunes plus some of our own somgs and the occasional cover.
We've been playing at numeerous sessions for fun plus paying gigs at various events and venues around the East Midlands, have supported larger bands at concert events - and even hosted our own. Last year for example we managed to fill the Lincoln Drill Hall, capacity about 300+.
I emailed Beverley Folk organisers twice to ask about how we might get on their bill - area 2 , whatever - and haven't even had a reply.

It should be promoting the local talent and the great unknown bands! However if i emailed i doubt we would get a reply either, i didn't think the line-up was anything special this year.
Well nothing that caught my eye anyway, it was mainly in the sessions, where we met the 'better' musicians, and everyone was enjoying themselves over drinks.
We'll just have to keep waiting and see if they realise that talent is better than £££!

I cannot comment on you not getting any reply from Beverley except to say that:

In 2002, when we ran the free people's voice festival the official festival people handed me all of the PR material and samplers that they had been sent from people looking for bookings - there were hundreds of them ranging from a couple of tracks on a C60 cassette (remember them?) to full commercial CDs from all around the world.

I imagine that those acts probably sent off samplers to every festival in the hope that someone would give them a try.

So, festival organisers are inundated with begging letters, emails and sample CDs and probably don't have the time to respond to them all (or any of them).

Its bad enough wading through all the assorted stuff you get sent if you are only running a small weekly club , leave alone a weekend festival

FWIW,
At least 2 of the acts at Beverley actually met at the Area 2 stage in Beverley; Moore, Moss and Rutter; and Blackbeard's Teaparty, and they are very accomplished. Why were they on the bill? They are obviously more than just good musicians, are really going for it and have gone down the right PR channels and served something of an apprenticeship at the appropriate festival.

Others less successful also have talent, but need to look at what these 2 groups have done, or the likes of Sam Pirt, also on the bill.
Perhaps you haven't knocked hard enough on the door. You need persistence as well as talent.
