"Prince's Day" from the movie 'Blown Away'. Movie about a bomb disposal unit in Boston. Conundrum however, because if they'd done their jobs properly, they'd have had to get rid of the movie first.

I SO agree with DC, above, about "Unchained Melody". I sat up until the wee hours just to see the film, "The Unchained", to hear where this fine song came from. You all know it. It is the one the Righteous Brothers did that starts, "Oh, my love, my darling! I've hungered for your charms the long lonely night." or something like that. Anyway, about two thirds the way through the film, some old guy with a barely tuned guitar and a voice that should have rusted the bars he was behind, at last sang the song. I thought, "Surely they must be kidding, I'll bet they, (the film makers,) do it right at the end." They didn't!

clueless don is entirely intitled to his opinion, but I always thought of the song "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" as a mediocre attempt to spin off a song from an outstanding movie.

"Dust"--Roy Rogers and Sons of the Pioneers. Believe It or Not this one nominated for the Oscar@ for best song of 1938, in Under Western Skies.

Doug beat me to "Unchained Melody", a monster song for Al Hibler and Roy Hamilton contemporaneously with the hardly seen film "Unchained". There is irony here, folks. Johnny Johnston, a big band singer of the 1940s, and a sometime actor in musical film, played the second lead in this prison drama. He was asked to sing the title song, but wanting to establish as a dramatic actor, he declined. Bad career choice! Next stop, a Friday night bowling show, "Make That Spare" or some such, BTW the star of the film was Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsh, NFL Hall of Fame receiver for the then LA Rams. Wisely gave up acting to become AD at U of Wisconsin, his alma mommy.

Almost any James Bond theme. Not that they are all good, but the movies are indistiguishable apart from a few props or characters (oddjob's hat for example - oddjob himself isn't too memorable, being standard villian no. 26)

the Cole Porter tune   Don't fence me in      has, obviously, long outlasted the musical in which it appeared. It's fun for me, as a rhythm guitarist, to play, which I do regularly at my Music with the Frail Elderly gig. It resonates, I suppose, in this agricultural area, where many of the 75+ crew lived with horses. Anyway, your thread title brought it immediately to mind, and I very nerdily wanted to get "Adios, Argentina" correct, and found this trivia:

      "Originally written in 1934 for Adios, Argentina, an unprodued 20th Century Fox film musical,    "Don't Fence Me In"    was based on text by a poet and engineer with the Department of Highways in Helena, Montana, Robert (Bob) Fletcher. Cole Porter, who had been asked to write a cowboy song for the 20th Century Fox musical, bought the poem from Fletcher for $250. Porter reworked Fletcher's poem, and when the song was first published, Porter was credited with sole authorship. Porter had wanted to give Fletcher co-authorship credit, but his publishers did not allow that. After the song became popular, however, Fletcher hired attorneys who negotiated his being given co-authorship credit in subsequent publications. Although it was one of the most popular songs of its time, Porter claimed it was his least favorite of his own compositions.[1]

The Fletcher poem used would seem to be "Open Range," contained in his 1934 book Coral Dust. The final couplet is "And turn me loose on my cayuse, But please don't fence me in." Apart from that, the rest of the lyrics appear to be Cole's invention, unless he utilized other material from the book.[2]" {wiki obviously}

I was watching Paulie again the other night and quite liked the song "I'll always love you Marie"

So I got to thinking what other songs seem just a little bit better than their movies deserve.

There's "Marion" from Robin Hood Men in Tights
and the opening credits song from "Carry on Cowboy"

Just for fun can you think of any.
