Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: IvanB Date: 29 Jun 11 - 10:57 AM I installed it yesterday in response to this thread, knowing I still had my 3.6 installation file handy if I wanted to go back. Not much difference in appearance, took me half a minute to figure out that the commands that used to spread across the top of the screen are now in a drop down box accessed at the top left. Other than that, I've noticed the speed which others have mentioned. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Girl Friday Date: 29 Jun 11 - 08:56 AM The only niggle I have so far, is that it is not yet compatible with the Google Toolbar. I have a Google website, and it was laborious getting to it this morning. Yahoo search seems to over rule Google. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 29 Jun 11 - 05:23 AM Same here, no problems or visible changes but increased speed. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 29 Jun 11 - 05:18 AM I've found that FF 5 is significantly faster on my PC, and downloads too seem to have improved. So far no problems with any of the addons and plugins. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Jun 11 - 08:04 PM Having read Firebug's OK, I've tried again. The only thing I'm missing now is Novel Moonlight (Silverlight for Linux). I'm not sure I'm worried about that one. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 Jun 11 - 12:02 PM Met Office weather widget doesn't work in FF5 |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Desert Dancer Date: 28 Jun 11 - 11:51 AM Firebug's working fine on 5, for me. ~ Becky in Tucson |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Artful Codger Date: 28 Jun 11 - 11:06 AM FWIW, I meant that as an open question, particularly to those who have already upgraded and would know. One can waste time trying to figure out the utility of the supposed improvements, but whether something is really useful depends on how it's been implemented--and whether it renders other main-use operations actually harder (as too often happens with these "upgrades".) So it's nice to hear the assessments of independent folks, who will tell not only the rosy side of things but also the groaty side. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: JHW Date: 28 Jun 11 - 05:19 AM Thanks to all. Artful Codger - No, I have no wish to change,I've no new feature wish list. I regretted moving to FF3 but have got used to it (Yahoo mail is currently threatening to make me 'upgrade' and the Met Office Weather Gadget is threatening a replacement Widget, both of which I'd rather they didn't!) Bill D - Thanks for link also note improvement on 4 |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: stallion Date: 28 Jun 11 - 04:39 AM says macafee site adviser doesn't work and summat else which doesn't matter, I find site adviser useful |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Jun 11 - 12:29 AM Still on 4 here. Was missing some or all of Firebug, Web Developer, Zend last time I looked to upgrade. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 28 Jun 11 - 12:15 AM Firefox upgraded itself yesterday - nuffin' seems different sandra |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Bill D Date: 27 Jun 11 - 10:52 PM There are a number of general improvements. You can look them up in as great a detail as you wish. Many changes are simply security, but a lot are better speed, more features. features |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Artful Codger Date: 27 Jun 11 - 10:25 PM Are there any (to you) compelling reasons to upgrade to 4 or 5--aside from the fact that support for 3 will at some not distant point be capped? In other words, are there features (like the better YouTube support) that would induce one to make the switch now rather than later? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: artbrooks Date: 27 Jun 11 - 07:56 PM 5 plays YouTube on a 64-bit machine, 4 didn't. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Bill D Date: 27 Jun 11 - 07:01 PM BTW... that post was done in Opera... this one is using Firefox. I happily use BOTH browsers for different features. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Bill D Date: 27 Jun 11 - 06:59 PM 5 seems to be tweaked to 'better than 4'. I had some issues with 4, but except for some add-ons needing updating, I think it's ok. I don't always agree with how they do some features, but it seems to work correctly. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: Andrez Date: 27 Jun 11 - 06:56 PM Its always worth being a little cautious when it comes to upgrading software. I generally turn off the update automatically option on software and wait to hear reports of user feedback first. I've managed to avoid a few dodgy software 'updates' this way especially some from Microsoft! The golden rule being: "if it ain't broke, dont fix it!". Cheers, Andrez |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: katlaughing Date: 27 Jun 11 - 06:38 PM I've got 5 also and not had any problems with it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: terrier Date: 27 Jun 11 - 06:05 PM I've just checked which version of FF I'm using. It says version 5. No problems so far, I don't even remember updating it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: DrugCrazed Date: 27 Jun 11 - 04:58 PM Haven't made the switch. Only run Firefox on my netbook (I run Rockmelt as an internet social man. Honest) and it's too much of a pain for me to do a manual update of it since I'm on Linux and it won't change the shortcut. Of course, I probably could if I was bothered but I may as well just let the package manager do it for me. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: scouse Date: 27 Jun 11 - 04:52 PM All in all the programs that don't work with 5 I really haven't missed been using it a month or so now with no problems what so ever.. I think some people make problems for themselves sometimes. As Aye, Phil. |
Subject: Tech: Firefox 5 - Have you tried it? From: JHW Date: 27 Jun 11 - 04:40 PM I'm still using FF3 and was wary of going to 4 as some Catters weren't keen. Now I've had an ad for Firefox 5 and as usual (I am a folkie) I'm scared that it will be spoilt by progress. Anyone using 5 ? |
