Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I love you because From: Allan C. Date: 22 Sep 99 - 08:38 AM Yeah, Jim Reeves did the earlier version. I could hear his voice in my head even when I saw Al Martino's name on the page I found. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I love you because From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 22 Sep 99 - 11:24 AM The Jim Reeves one is the one I think of as well. I imagine it would be at Cowpie or the Jim Reeves web-pages. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I love you because From: Dale Rose Date: 22 Sep 99 - 12:35 PM I'm having such a hard time putting this one together in my mind, but I do know it was written by Leon Payne. At any rate, there are quite a number of good performances which predate the Jim Reeves or Al Martino ~~ good though they may be. Elvis Presley recorded it for Sun in 1954, and it was not a new song then. I think I remember earlier recordings by Ernest Tubb, Leon Payne himself, George Morgan, and more, but at the moment I just can't think of the recorded history of the song. No doubt someone will come along and correct me, and add to the knowledge. In any event, think late 1940s for the first one. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I love you because From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 18 Dec 04 - 01:08 PM There is an open discussion on "the best love song". On several similar threads in the past I voted for this one. Myself and others have posted the lyrics on threads but it dosen't seem to be in the DT. Joe, perhaps it should be considered. Leon Payne himself can be heard singing this on The Record Lady. It has been recorded many times and was charted by several different country and pop stars. To my mind Leon himself does the best job though. He was a star of the old Louisianna Hayride back in te 1940's- 50's . He wrote this for his wife Myrtie. Best regards, Sandy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I love you because From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Dec 04 - 01:41 PM Us irreverent youths used to sing 'I love you because you've got big glands dear' We definitely got the original from a Jim Reeves record. Giok |

Subject: ADD: I Love You Because (Leon Payne) From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Dec 04 - 03:17 PM Here is a slightly different version of the lyrics, with chords deleted to make searching easier. I marked this thread for harvesting, but note that popular songs take second priority in the Digital Tradition, which has an emphasis on traditional music. Sure is a good song, though. -Joe Offer- I LOVE YOU BECAUSE (Leon Payne, 1949) I love you because you understand, dear Ev'ry single thing I try to do You're always there to lend a helping hand, dear I love you most of all because you're you. No matter what the world may say about me I know your love will always see me through I love you for the way you never doubt me But most of all I love you 'cause you're you. I love you because my heart is lighter Ev'ry time I'm walking by your side I love you because the future's brighter The door to happiness you open wide. No matter what may be the style or season I know your heart will always be true I love you for a hundred thousand reasons But, most of all I love you 'cause you're you. ©1949, by Acuff-Rose-Opryland Musinc Source: Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy (Dorothy Horstman, 1975, 1996) |

Subject: RE: Req/Add: I love you because From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 19 Dec 04 - 08:27 AM Thanks, Giok ! :-} This song goes back to the days of the Lousianna Hayride whicc grew to rival the Grand Old Opry. Rather than creep this thread too far I will start one on the Hayride. Sandy |
