Subject: Alex Beaton in critical condition
From: JedMarum
Date: 05 Jul 11 - 06:54 PM

Well-loved, long favored Scottish folk singer, Alex Beaton is in hospital in the Nashville TN area in critical condition.

Alex suffered a rupture disc that blocked his heart function a few days ago. He was revived by CPR and rushed into surgery. The extent of damage from his heart stoppage is not yet known. Likewise the extent of nerve damage from his spinal injury has yet to be determined. But Alex is breathing on his own, is conscious and has some signs of good nerve function.

My thoughts and prayers are with Alex and his family.

Jed - Any updates on Alex's status? I assume recovery is a long term scenario based on the description you provided. How is Linda faring? Has Annie made the trip to Nashville? I know she's suffering from medical problems of her own.

Update via friends from the Texas Scottish Festival

"Update on Alex: Beth tells me that Alex is doing much the same for the moment, but because of the cervical collar/neck brace he is having some difficulty swallowing/eating so they may go to a feeding tube for a while. He is doing his breathing exercises, ...though, and his lungs are sounding better. He can move his toes some and they plan to begin physical therapy today or tomorrow. They have seen the surgeon but are still waiting to see the neurologist. He flirted with the cleaning lady and call Beth a "pain in the arse" several times (possibly the meds...or not). Please pass this on to anyone and continue to think strong, healing thoughts.

A wonderful performer, warm and witty, and also one hell of a guitar player, though he never seems to get credit for it.

Here's hoping for better news soon.

My husband and I loved Alex from the minute we heard him perform at the games in Pleasanton, California about six years ago. We have been on two tours of Scotland with him and had the time of our lives both times! I have all of his CD's and listen to his beautiful voice often on my Ipod. His music is so soothing and just plain fun. We too can not believe such a vibrant, wonderful, spirited man is now in a hospital bed. We hope and pray that that vigor and spunk will help him to fight his way back to his family and friends who love him. Please get well, Alex! We all love you so much!

Like Karen Giantasio, I, too, had the pleasure of an outstanding guided tour of Scotland with Alex. He may be our "resting giant" at the moment, but if any man has the power to recover, it is our Alex.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you Alex and to your family. Please do what the doctors say, don't make the nurses mad and get well soon. I will miss seeing you at the Flagstaff Celtic Festival this year.

I spent 12 days with Alex in Scotland in fall, 2009, and had a great time with him, he is always funny and sings great old Scottish and Irish songs.

When I first saw him in the bar of the Glasgow hotel, I called out "Alex Beaton?"   I had never seen him before but had seen his picture on an album of his. He walked right up to me and said, "Do I owe you money?"

We got along great after that. My best wishes to Alex on his recovery!

I was on the same 2009 Scotland tour as Hap and Donna, and Alex made the trip fun and relaxing for us. Every day I looked forward to his greeting on the bus... "Arggg, ya Miserable Lot!"

I could go on forever about his wit, charm and graciousness and actually be telling the truth.

Alex, if you're wiggling your toes in physical therapy, here's to the next level - reels and jigs. Get well soon!

I found your music about ten years ago, loved it but could never find it in any of our Seattle area stores. I finally went to your web site and ordered four of your CD's.
Thank you for all the pleasure you have given me. Blessing to you and your family.

An update from friends at the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games...

Today is exactly one month since Alex had surgery for his accident and he reached BIG milestone today. He was transferred to Shepherd Center, a rehab facility with a special focus on spinal cord injuries, in Atlanta to begin his rehabilitation! This is a world class center with highly trained professionals and we are all very excited about this BIG step forward. His transport, by an air-ambulance,... went very smoothly and he & Linda arrived at Shepherd this afternoon.

Linda said things could not be better there! The staff had researched Alex, been to his website, and found out about who he is as a person…..not just a patient. Three different doctors came separately to meet Alex and talk with him. Each spent almost an hour and all were very encouraging. Alex was able to tell each of them where the doctor was touching him throughout the exam (he could FEEL it!).

They have changed the way he is using the ventilator and he is doing more of his own breathing. With some adjustments, he was able to talk for a while and Linda said he did not stop talking for 45 minutes straight!! She said he never sounded better.

Also the speech therapist met with Alex and he passed his swallow study! This means he will be able to eat & drink and they ordered a regular diet for him! Tonight he drank three cups of water through a straw and had some pudding. It has been a month since he has eaten by mouth so it will take some time to work back up to a full diet.

Alex is still in ICU and visitation is limited because of that but we will get more details about the policies of Shepherd tomorrow. The mailing address is listed below and we will also have an email address soon.

Alex Beaton – ICU #7
C/O Shepherd Center
2020 Peachtree Road, NW
Atlanta, Georgia 30309

All of this, along with the fact that his neck brace was removed yesterday, has been very encouraging to Alex and Linda. He is in great spirits today and looking forward to the next part of his journey. As he left Baptist MICU today, the nurses had some cards and a gift for him. Some of them cried as they said goodbye to him—a testimony to how he had touched their life. We are all so fortunately to know this special man!!

May the Prayers continue as he goes thru his Therapy.
And may the Doctors, Nurses & God Almighty continue to help his healing with a full recovery.
Call me selfish,
I look forward to listening to Alex in the not to distant future, until then I will continue to treasure the CD's I have.
My Thoughts & Prayers go out to Alex, Linda & the Family.
All The Best,

We are so thrilled to hear of your improvement, Alex. You're truly an inspiration in every way. We love your music, your wit, your Scottish humor, your faith, kindness, generosity, etc. You are so much more than an "Entertainer" to those who love and admire you - also a great "Teacher" of Scottish History, and you make us all feel like Personal Friends.

You have a special place in the hearts of our our family. You know, Bob and I fell in love while listening to your music. We had a Scottish Wedding, partially due to your influence. Our Grandchildren's first music was "Kidding Around", and the first song they could sing was "Ally Bally" (I know, really "Coulter's Candy"). When you met Jordie at age 3, you dedicated the song to her in front of a huge crowd in Sun City. You gave her a signed CD of her own. At 6 now, she has very fond memories of that. A photo of the two of you hangs on her wall. This February, you sang two songs at the request of Willi (3), who walked up to you in his Wallace Kilt during your performance. You were so sweet, and made him feel SO IMPORTANT!

Thank you for the touching impact that you have on so many lives. Millions of Prayers are going up on your behalf. We Pray for you and your family. May your faith, strength, and determination help you continue on this road to recovery. We look forward to seeing you this coming February in Phoenix. God Bless You and Yours!

Love, Dianne, Bob, Jordie, and Willi

Check Alex's web site at http://www.alexbeaton.com/. I hear second-hand that he is mentally sharp, but still in a wheelchair with an awful lot of rehab ahead of him.

For those who are able, there is a "Donate" button on Alex's home page to help with rehabilitation costs.

You can friend him from his FaceBook page

Here's a recent note from FaceBook:

As many of you know, Alex has been at the VA hospital in Memphis TN since the week before Christmas. Yesterday, Alex's medical conference was held and the bottom line is that he will discharged from the VA on Valentine's Day-what a present for the two of us!!

Until that time, if people want to visit him at the VA, it's best to do so after 3:00 pm Monday through Friday or on the weekend.

He continues to work hard in therapy and is still seeing progress in his recovery. Please keep him in your prayers that he may finally get to come home after seven and one-half months in four different hospitals! We can not begin to tell your how much you love and support have meant to us.

Be well and love to you all,
Linda Beaton

Alex, we were just on the Kentucky Scottish Weekend website to plan our annual trip to see you, and were shocked to find out what you've been going through. We love you dearly and are catching up on eight months of prayers and positive thoughts! We're thrilled to hear that you've made such remarkable progress and are finally home now.

Bill and I stumbled across the Kentucky event back in the early 90s quite by accident when we were down that way from Pekin, Illinois, for a college alumni event. It was you who got us hooked, though, and we've been back every year since and have scheduled vacations around the Detroit and Ohio games just to see you perform there. Our son Joe has heard you since before he was born and will surely miss his annual ritual - 15 years now! - of your presenting him with your name tag at the end of the Kentucky weekend. We've been planning a Scotland tour with you for his high school graduation present, and we'll hold you to it!

Thank you for all the joy you've given to your old and new fans through the years.

--Pam, Bill and Joe Ritter

We are praying for ya!

Texas Scottish Fan, I can almost see your house from here. I work at UTA in the Library (also am MA '99 English), and a favorite English professor (Lacy) also backs up to the parking lot for the festival venue. White Way, on the corner. I'm glad to see other North Texas participants here at Mudcat.

Jed, do you have any updates for Alex you can share? I'm sorry you won't make it to the N. TX Scottish event, but at least it's because you're busy, not because of anything more alarming.

Alex - I fell in love with you, your smile, humor & music at an after hours music session with Benny McInalley at Ireland's 32 in about 1978-79! I have been a major fan ever since & have all of your original tapes & now, CD's. I have been following your career & now your new "journey" and am so happy to hear that you are home & improving. It may be a long road, but it is not a lonely road. There are so many people who are praying for you & wishing all the best for you & your family. Hope to hear your lovely voice again soon!!!

DEAR ALEX-

THE VERY FIRST TIME I MET YOU WAS AT THE COSTA MESA FAIRGROUNDS MEMORIAL DAY SCOTTISH FESTIVAL,I WAS LOOKING AT KILT MATERIAL AND YOU HELPED ME. I HAD NO IDEA WHO YOU WERE UNTIL I SAW YOU ON STAGE LATER THAT DAY. YOU WERE SO SWEET AND KNOWLEDGEABLE IN HELPING ME. NEEDLESS TO SAY WHEN I REALIZED WHO YOU WERE I WAS EXTREMELY IMPRESSED BY OUR FIRST MEETING. OVER THE YEARS I ENJOYED YOU MANY TIMES THERE AND ALSO IN PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA. MY HUSBAND IS IRISH BUT HE STILL LOVES YOU ALSO.

IN THE YEARS 2000 AND 2002 I PUT ON TWO SCOTTISH FESTIVAL DANCE EVENINGS FOR OUR ELKS CLUB IN HEMET, CALIFORNIA SINCE WE HAD A LARGE GROUP OF SCOTTISH THAT BELONGED TO OUR CLUB. THEY LOVED IT. ONE OF OUR GUYS HAS SINCE PASSED AWAY "SCOTTY" PLAYED THE BAG PIPES FOR US.

I THINK IT WAS 2006 OR 2007 I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE AN ALEX BEATON NIGHT AND I CALLED YOU TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE. THE ELKS CLUB AUXILIARY WAS NOT ABLE TO PAY WHAT YOU WOULD REQUIRE FOR AN EVENING SUCH AS THAT BUT YOU WERE SO GRACIOUS TO ME.

YESTERDAY I WAS WORKING AS A STAND-IN ON A COMMERCIAL SHOOT IN HOLLYWOOD AND HAPPENED TO MENTION YOUR NAME IN TALKING TO A GAL BY THE NAME OF COLLEEN WHO HAS AN IRISH NAME BUT HER DAD WAS BORN IN GLASGOW, SCOTLAND. LATER ANOTHER LADY ON SET KNOWS A FRIEND OF YOURS AND TOLD ME OF YOUR MISFORTUNE. I WAS SO SAD TO HEAR ABOUT IT. IF ANYONE DESERVES A BREAK ALEX YOU DO. I WILL ALWAYS BE PRAYING FOR YOU WITH LOVE IN MY HEART. SINCERELY- GAIL NUGENT

SRS - sorry you missed TSF this year. I heard good reports but did not make it myself.

I have not heard anything more about Alex for a while. I expect to speak with a mutual friend tomorrow, so I will update this thread with any news.

I was dropped from the TSF line up last year and this. I haven't heard why. I presume they wanted new blood. I did enjoy the weekend at home and out of the heat, but missed seeing some old friends.

No worries, though; when one door closes you find new ones to open.

Hello Linda - I don't believe we've met in real life, but I know Alex from a few of the festivals we've both played over the years. I think of him often and I pray that you and he are well and healing. I've driven by your region on a few trips and always wish I could stop in and say hello.

Alex and I traded discs back a couple of years back when we were both playing a festival in Monroe LA. He gave me "From The Sea To The Shore" which I have studied pretty carefully, enjoying the music and taking careful note of its excellent production. With a bit of luck, that study will make my next project even better!

Anyway - please remember to me Alex, and again my very best to you both.

This thread's title needs to be updated. What do you think, Jed?

His facebook page and his AlexBeaton.com website.

This is a portion of a note from his website:

A Message from Alex 9/22/2012
Linda and I will be returning to the wonderful Stone Mountain Highland Games for my 26th straight year and I am looking forward to seeing many of my fans and friends.

For those that have not heard, I have been working on a new CD and hope to have it released by the time we get to Atlanta. Titled "A Live Concert with Alex Beaton and Guests, Alasdair Fraser and Eric Rigler", it was recorded at the Costa Mesa Games in 1992 by my friend Dick McGilvery. The collection is a double CD of over two hours of song, music and lively banter. It not only includes solo performances but I team up with master fiddler Alasdair Fraser for "The Battle's O'er" and the world renowned piper, Eric Rigler, joins Alasdair and myself for "A Song for Ireland". I have been working with my close friend, Randy Farrar, to produce the CD and I am excited to see it released.

On a personal note, the many cards, letters and emails of encouragement from my friends and fans are a continuing source of cheer and inspiration to me and I thank you all for your kind words. And your continuing donations to the Alex Beaton Rehabilitation Fund are a blessing to both Linda and I.

Alex has not fully recovered. He is still paralyzed from the neck down, with some movement in a few of his fingers, and he still needs prayers/good thoughts/wishes.

Alex;

My husband and I have been fans for many years. We have most of your cd's and meet you several times at the Texas Scottish Festival in Arlington. You gave me a Christmas CD laughing saying that we had 30 of your cd's when you only had 20. Our prayers and love is with you and hope to see you again! Do well.   Diane And Aaron Beene

It seems you've been on an amazing journey since the Sawmill in Pasadena. Perhaps someday we can catch up. But for now, know that I'm keeping a good thought and a lot of prayer for an old friend. You've always seemed bigger than your surroundings to me, and I'm confident you will return from this just as big.

I spoke with Alex today. His voice is still weak and raspy, but appears to be getting stronger. He has been bedridden for quite a while, and being treated for the attendant problems that brings.
He can move his right arm a little and a couple of fingers on his hand, enough to move around in his wheelchair, but he's still basically paralyzed from the neck down.
He sounded upbeat and in good spirits given his condition.
So please keep him in your prayers/good thoughts and wishes.
He has a new CD of songs which he had recorded before the accident, with backup by Alastair Fraser and other musicians.
Gotta see if I can find the link for it.

I had seen Alex at the Ohio Games, and was enthralled with his voice. Like many, I showed up every time he was going to be at the games. Later on, for some reason, I thought it would be okay to call him because I couldn't find a disc I loved. Believe it or not, he answered the phone! We talked about a disc I couldn't find and he decided to send it to me along with others he thought i'd enjoy.
What a dear, generous man.
Obviously, I had a crush on him, along with about a zillion others.
Alex, I wish you good health and peace, and that you know how many millions of people are praying for you. Thank you for the joy you have given to so many of us. Be well, We are all praying for you.
