Subject: Tech: Best Free Websites From: Les in Chorlton Date: 07 Jul 11 - 03:25 AM Hi Folks, I know I have asked the question before but times and technology move on so here we go again: We are looking for a preferably free website for our sessions at The Beech in Chorlton. Manchester. I would like to be able to park pdfs, MS Word documnets, ABC files, photograps and video, so that they can be downloaded by others. Any advice? L in C# |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: Will Fly Date: 07 Jul 11 - 04:00 AM Hi Les - I can't add much more to the list in the post above except to say that most of these free sites have restrictions on the videos that can be posted - purely for space reasons. So you may have to post videos on specialist sites like YouTube or Vimeo and embed the code into your website. If you want a blog/website with a large amount of space for videos, then you'll probably have to pay. I'd also be wary of uploading Word (.doc or .docx) files, as some people may not be able to read or download them. Conversion of verbal documents to PDF (Portable Document Format) is probably better. Lots of mp3s will also take up file space - even at around 3-4Mb a pop. I used to have a page of free, downloadable mp3 files on my own web site, but had to take them down as I was rapidly using up my Gb allocation - and I pay for my website! Just a few thoughts... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: Will Fly Date: 07 Jul 11 - 04:04 AM Forgot to say, Les - there are social networking sites such as those provided by Ning which are free - but only up to a certain number of members. I use Ning for my own little social site - but I'll have to pay if it goes beyond 150 members. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: Arthur_itus Date: 07 Jul 11 - 04:38 AM A new one coming on th emarket is Google+ It is still in its trial period, but will probably be a strong contender to Facebook. Two things I like about Google+ is that you can control the groups of people you make as friends. Each group will be private from any other group. So you can have a family group, where nobody other than the family can see anything posted and you could have a seperate group for Folk Music and so on and so forth. Facebook can't do that. The second is that you can skype inside Google+ and hold meetings with several people at the same time. Google+ is aiming at the smart phone users which is great. I would assume that it will be computer based as well. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: Les in Chorlton Date: 07 Jul 11 - 05:18 AM Thanks again folks. Will - no too bothered about video - as you say links to U tube work well. The real need for us is pdfs and ABC Explorer so that we can share our tune book - 82 tunes going to 100 soon. Cheers L in C# |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: GUEST Date: 07 Jul 11 - 05:34 AM abc or abc explorer? What are you hoping to do? |

Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: Les in Chorlton Date: 07 Jul 11 - 09:38 AM We have a tune book with 82 ABC Explorer - agreat programme for sharing and listening to tunes. We have also saved them as pdfs. Most people can clearly open and use pdfs but for those of us who cannot read music listening to the tunes via ABC Explorer is brilliant. I have shared both via e-mail but it would be simpler to park the pdfs and the ABCs somewhere and let people help themselves. L in C |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: GUEST Date: 07 Jul 11 - 09:49 AM OK, I thought you might have been thinking of running Abc Explorer on the website (actually you could run the programs it uses to do the pdf, etc. but not on a free website and even paid for shared hosting might be hard to find...) --- It might also be adding the midis to your site for people to download.- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Best Free Websites From: GUEST Date: 07 Jul 11 - 10:55 AM I have used Esnips for storing all sorts of stuff for some time. It's not ideal for mac users or people who don't allow Active X but I have 2gb of my 5gb space in use and can send people links to it. So for example here is an invention (!!) that I linked to ages ago. I also have videos, documents and music there which can be downloaded. Can share it with all or specific groups. I link some of the music up there from web space (which hence can be tiny and no bandwidth) eg some tunes etc which is a little widget they supply. Total cost: £0. Downside: Annoy mac users and the security conscious |
